Claire was born and grew up in New Jersey, graduated with an undergraduate degree in English from Bucknell University and an MA in English Literature from Boston University. She lived her early adult years in Boston, MA where she met her husband. She was driven by a passion to help every person she befriended or touched through her role as constituent assistant to the late U.S. Senator Edward Brooke of Massachusetts and her lifetime of teaching students of all age levels from grade school, college, and elder hostel. She was an avid reader, loved helping her son and her students appreciate a good book, and was a feisty debater on subjects she was passionate about. As a college professor of a subject almost every student hated but had to take – English Literature – she often became very animated with her students, sometimes dressing up in costume or showing up with props to keep their attention during lectures, hoping to drive home the point that learning, regardless of the subject, can be fun. She enjoyed doing crafts and building miniatures, especially with friends, playing trivia games – she was once a contestant on the television game show Jeopardy!, and in her later years she took piano and dulcimer lessons and enjoyed attending local theatrical performances.
Claire is survived by her husband of 47 years, Bob; her son Christopher (Eileen) and two granddaughters, Emily and Katie, of Webster Groves, MO; and her two brothers, Paul Alfano (Claire) of Lancaster, SC and Peter Alfano of Miami Beach, FL.
