A longtime resident of Eaglewood, Georgia was known for her caring of her many friends and loved ones and her devotion to the First United Methodist Church of Hobe Sound.
Her caring and generosity were well known throughout the Hobe Sound community, whether it was hosting a lavish dinner party or a smaller gathering at her home. Georgia could frequently be found at many of the local restaurants, hosting friends and neighbors.
Born on May 27, 1918 in Brooklyn, New York, she went through World Wars, terrorism and The Great Depression. None of that stopped her from traveling around the world. Whether it was just a cruise to the Caribbean, a trip to the Holy Land, a vacation to Australia and New Zealand or a trip on the Orient Express, Georgia was always planning a trip. When travel became a little more difficult, she still loved to go to New Jersey or New York to visit family.
Many of her trips were with her first husband, Bill Bird, a retired Wall Street executive who later became a Methodist minister. Georgia celebrated her second marriage with George Mackay by touring Hawaii for their honeymoon. After marrying her third husband, Vinny Lawrence, they moved to Florida to play golf and enjoy everything that Hobe Sound offers.
Even as a retired Executive Assistant for the Namm Corporation, the former Namm-Loesser Department store in Brooklyn, Georgia made frequent trips back to New York as a valued Board member.
Her devotion to the church included serving on many committees. Georgia was pivotal in landscaping the front of the church and helping to run the Child Care Center. She was also responsible for modernizing and enlarging the church kitchen, so that people in need could be fed and they could hold large events in the Fellowship Hall.
Always elegantly dressed, this elegant, caring woman was always available when someone needed any kind of help. It could be financial, consulting or just listening. Her generosity extended beyond the community also with support of the Shriners among the charities and any organizations that supported the welfare of animals.
Although many of her friends have passed away, she will still be missed by the many lives that were touched by her loving and caring heart.
She’s survived by her step children. Elizabeth and Donald Mackay, nieces Joann Blaker, Carol Licata, Linda Erickson and nephew, Ed Izzo.
A service will be held on Monday, February 20, 2023 at The Hobe Sound Methodist Church on Federal Highway at 11:00AM.
As a tribute to Georgia, the family asks that folks attending the service dress up a little. We all know how she was always very meticulous in her appearance, so we just thought it would appropriate to dress up for her service, but certainly not a requirement.
She will be buried at Greenwood Cemetery in Brooklyn.
