

Born on December 19, 1932, Jim, or Jimmy, as his family and friends called him, grew up in Medford, MA. He was the son of Anna and Armando Cariani. He graduated from Medford High School and served as an airplane mechanic in the US Army. He attended Boston University on the GI bill, graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree in mechanical engineering, and had a long and successful career with the New England Electric Company.
He married his beloved wife, Denise (O’Brien) on January 30, 1960, and together they had four children. Jim was completely devoted to his family. In addition to his wife, he is survived by his two sons, Peter Cariani and Keith Cariani and wife, Diana; two daughters, Leslie Westhaver and husband Bob, and Kim Cariani; grandsons James Davis, Robert Westhaver, Richard Westhaver and Dominick Cariani; granddaughters Lisa Davis, Davina Cariani, Olivia Cariani and Sophia Cariani; and brother Paul Cariani and wife Sheila.
Jim was a lifelong learner, curious about the world, and well-informed about current events. He took many graduate level classes at Boston University, Harvard University, MIT and the University of Michigan throughout his career. He enjoyed discussing books, movies, history, politics, and many other topics with family and friends. Although he was a very private man, he was exceptionally selfless, and the kindness of his heart showed through in countless acts of quiet charity.
A gathering of family and friends for James will be held at the Aycock Funeral Home, 6801 SE Federal Highway, Stuart, FL, from 4:30 PM-8:00 PM on Monday, October 25. A funeral service will be held at St. Christopher Church, 12001 SE Federal Highway, Hobe Sound, FL at 10:00 AM on Tuesday, October 26. Interment of ashes will take place at a later date in Medford, MA.
Memorial services will be held on Friday, June 24th, 2022 at 1:00 PM at Oak Grove Cemetery, 230 Playstead Road, Medford, MA 02155.
