

He was born in Rhineland, MO, eldest son of Alvin and Lydia Mayer. Johnny and his wife Jewell lived in Fulton and Mexico, MO prior to moving to Fayette in 1937. Johnny was the Standard Oil agent from 1937 until his retirement in 1976.
Johnny’s life was marked by his deep commitment to his faith and his family. For many years he was the devoted caregiver of his wife. He was an active member of St. Joseph Catholic Church in Fayette and was a Fourth Degree Knight of Columbus. He was a member of the Lions Club and actively promoted civic life in Howard County. Johnny found enjoyment in hunting, fishing, woodworking, tinkering with cars, growing tomatoes, and following his beloved St. Louis Cardinals.
Survivors include two sons, Robert Mayer of Jensen Beach, FL, and Richard Mayer of Lebanon, MO; two daughters, Jo Ann Allen of Vienna, VA, and Elizabeth (Betty) Wilkinson of Stuart, FL; five grandchildren, Michael Mayer, Kerry Gates, Julie Wagy, Logan Wilkinson, and Chelsea Hoffman; seven great-grandchildren, and two great-great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents and his wife; three brothers, George Mayer, William Mayer, and Richard Mayer; one son Jackie Mayer; two grandsons, Andy Mayer and Ryan Mayer.
A funeral Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Saturday, September 22nd at 1 p.m. at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Fayette with Father Robert Duesdieker officiating. Visitation with the family will be held Friday, September 21st from 4:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. at Freimonth-Freese Funeral Home and at 11:45 a.m. at the church before the funeral Mass on Saturday. Burial will be in Rhineland, MO in the cemetery of The Church of the Risen Savior, 605 Bluff Street.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be sent in care of the Friemonth-Freese Funeral Home, 174 Hwy. 5 & 240 North, Fayette, MO 65248. The family suggests the following for consideration: the Fayette Fire Department, the Fayette Senior Center, or St. Joseph Church Hall.
