The Korean War had started. Marshall opted to join the Air Force. He served as a medic assisting with the transportation of the wounded from Korea to the United States. After a year plus, the Air Force agreed to let him out to study medicine on the condition he would complete his enlistment upon graduation. He came home and the GI Bill enabled him to go to and graduate from the Medical College of Virginia, in 1957. While in medical school he met and married Mary Ray Dickson in 1957. Even though the Air Force stated his obligation to serve more time had been written off, Marshall felt morally obligated to serve and joined the Navy. So his first two years of medical practice were spent in the Navy in Hawaii, where his first son was born.
After the service, Dr. Evans specialized in nuclear medicine in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania and joined the space program in Cape Canaveral. After a couple of years he realized Family Practice was more in line with his interests and desire to care for and treat the whole person and not just the industrially related
issues in a person's life. So they moved with their three sons to Tampa and finally put down their roots in Stuart, Florida.
Marshall and Mary Ray immediately became involved in the life and activities of Stuart, as well as the surrounding countryside. Aside from his medical practice, Marshall participated in the activities of First United Methodist Church, joined the local tennis clubs, and helped to form the Stuart's Buoys and Bars Boat Club. After retiring in 1995, he cared for patients as a volunteer through Volunteers in Medicine and Hospice.
Marshall Evans is survived by his much loved sons: Marshall Levering Evans, his wife Jeanne Evans; David Cary Evans; and Richard Dickson Evans; his much loved grandchildren: Jessica Renae Evans, Alli Evans, and Jamie LeCroy; sisters: Elizabeth W. Evans and Mary L. Evans; and niece: Linda Early. He was predeceased by his wife, Mary Ray Evans in September 2014.
A Memorial Service will be held on Monday, March 23, 2015 at 4:00PM at First United Methodist Church in Stuart, Florida. In lieu of flowers memorial gifts can be sent to First United Methodist Church of Stuart: 1500 South Kanner Highway, Stuart, FL 34994.
