Mary Ann was born on April 30, 1941, in Washington, D.C., to Mary and Norman Newby. She grew up on Observatory Place in Georgetown with her 5 siblings: Barbara Jean, twin brother Norman Jr., Richard, Helen, and Donna. Mary Ann worked for the National Labor Relations Board in Washington, D.C., before beginning her 42 year career as a flight attendant with Northwest Airlines. Her profession brought her to countries all over the globe, but her favorite places to visit were Germany, Italy, England and Japan. Mary Ann found joy in bringing treats and collectibles back from these countries for her husband, family and friends.
One day on a flight, Mary Ann met Captain Dick Robbins while he was headed to Rochester, Minnesota, for his flight physical to work for Northwest Airlines. Mary Ann and Dick hastily married after a courtship of just 8 years. They continued to travel the world together, while planting their roots in Minnesota, then Florida. They celebrated their 49th wedding anniversary on July 19th, 2024.
To know Mary Ann was to know love, selflessness and generosity personified. Her beauty was an outward reflection of her equally beautiful heart. Mary Ann brought life and smiles to anyone (pets, raccoons and any other wildlife included) fortunate enough to meet her.
Mary Ann is survived by her devoted husband Dick; granddaughters Priscilla Lim and Leah Ditchek; sisters Barbara Jean Perrone, Helen Niles and Donna Crump; nieces Anna Sacks and Elizabeth Veldman, and many more nieces, nephews and family members who all loved her dearly.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the Alzheimer’s Association to support Alzheimer’s research.
