
Born March 9, 1942 in Long Island, NY, he was the son of Joseph M. and Camille J. (Messina) Rossini. He was raised in Long Island and graduated from All Hollows High School in the Bronx.
He served in the United States Navy as Lt. Commander at the U. S. Navy Hospital in Charleston, SC, during the Vietnam War. Dr. Rossini earned his undergraduate degree from the University of Dayton and his doctorate from St. Louis University.
Dr. Rossini researched diabetes throughout his 48-year career beginning at Joslin Center of Boston before becoming professor and leader of the Division of Diabetes at UMass in Worcester. Upon his retirement in 2009, he was names a Professor Emeritus at UMass and returned to the Joslin Center as acting head of Immunobiology and volunteered to mentor young researchers. Dr. Rossini was a visiting scholar at Harvard University and a prolific publisher of countless research papers. During his career, he enjoyed being known as a “triple threat”: clinician, researcher and teacher. He was the proud recipient of many commendations over the years for his tireless efforts toward diabetic studies including the Banting Medal for Scientific Achievement Award (2003) and Albert Renold Award (2009).
He recognized his mentors and colleagues when he quoted Newton: ”If I have seen further, it is by standing on the shoulders of giants.”
Beloved husband of 48 years to Ann (Sullivan) Rossini; devoted father of Anthony “Tony” Rossini and his wife Brenda of Glen Mills, PA, Katherine “Katie” Huber and her husband Jeffrey of Ellicott City, MD, Michael Rossini and his wife Mary of Natick; loving brother of Carl Rossini and his wife Marie of Chicago, IL, Joseph M. Rossini and his wife Jan Sue of Memphis, TN; proud grandfather of Tyler, Allison, Emily, Caroline, Antonia, Theodore “Teddy”, Julia and Ava. He is also survived by many nieces, nephews, cousins and in-laws.
A memorial funeral Mass will be held Saturday, August 20 at 10AM at Good Shepherd Parish (St. Ann Church), 124 Cochituate Road (RT 27), Wayland. Interment will follow at Mt. Pleasant Cemetery in Sudbury.
Calling hours will be held Friday, August 19 from 4-8PM at the Duckett – J. S. Waterman & Sons Home of Memorial Tribute, 656 Boston Post Road, Sudbury.
