September 8, 1911 - February 28, 2012
Ellis “Pete” Edwin Everett died in his home in Sudbury, MA on February 28, 2012 of a heart attack. He was 100 years old having celebrated the big event at a party in September.
He was born at home in Braceville, OH, the son of Charles Everett and Mary Layton on September 8, 1911. During his long life, he held many jobs the longest being a tool and die maker for Packard Electric Division of General Motors where he was a journeyman for 41 years, having retired on July 4, 1975. One of his proudest achievements while at Packard was the establishment of an apprentice program to train journeyman. For this he established the syllabus, recruited teachers and trainers and nurtured his apprentices through their many years of learning.
Active in his community, Mr. Everett served as Chairman of the Braceville Zoning Board as well as Chairman of the Trustees for the Braceville Methodist Church. He was a member of the Odd Fellows in Warren, OH and had gone through the chairs.
Mr. Everett was married in January 1934 to Gladys Hall who predeceased him in March 1993. He remained in the family home in Braceville until moving to Weston, MA in March 2008 to live with his daughter, Carlie, and son-in-law, Tom Friedlander. In January 2011 they all moved to Sudbury, MA where he passed away.
He lived a full and active life having had a plethora of jobs during his early life surrounding the depression. These included milking cows on his grandfather’s farm, shining shoes, making sundaes as a fountain boy at a local confectionary store, delivering coal, pressing men’s suits, delivering dry cleaning, washing dishes and operating a crane for a steel mill. His job list also includes being a short order cook, house painter, pickler, mechanic and truck driver. He built and raced hydroplanes, raised horses, traveled with his motor home and played the drums.
After retiring, his last job at age 90 was as a teaching assistant for a Head Start program, perhaps the happiest one he enjoyed. Working with 4 and 5 year olds, he loved the activity and love they gave him and he returned it equally. It was only after his physician told him that he was getting too many colds that he was forced to retire one last time.
Mr. Everett was ambulatory up until his death and enjoyed going out for dinner to have his “seven and seven” or fourteen as he joked. He always joined his family’s friends at the dining room table and regaled everyone with the stories of his long life. His memory for these events was amazing.
Mr. Everett had one brother, Willis Everett, who predeceased him. He is survived by his daughter and son-in-law and two granddaughters, Alyson Everett Friedlander of Sudbury, MA and Stephanie Everett Friedlander of Nashville, TN.
A graveside memorial service will be held at the Braceville, OH cemetery at 11:30 AM on Wednesday, March 21, 2012. Reverend Marvin Brown will officiate. Memorial contributions may be made to the Braceville United Methodist Church, Newton Falls, OH 44444.
