On Wednesday, December 12, 2018, Lizbeth Betty Stearns Ferris, loving mother of four children and wife of the late Sumner W. Ferris, passed away at the age of 93. Betty was born on October 28, 1925 in Washington D.C. and moved with her parents John Lester Stearns and Amelia Holliday Stearns to Wellesley Hills at age 2. She is survived by her sister Amelia Stearns Archibald, and her brother John Sargent Stearns. A 1943 graduate of Wellesley High School, Betty went on to graduate from Vassar College in 1946. In 1947, she married Sumner Wright Ferris whose passing was in 2004. Together, they raised four children: Louise Ferris Burt of Bethel VT, Alison Ferris Tomlinson of Randolph NH, David Wright Ferris of Torrance CA and Benjamin Greeley Ferris II of Lafayette CA. Betty was an inspiration to her six grand children and to four great grandchildren as well. Throughout her life, a passion for horticulture and gardening led to her involvement in, in addition to serving as a board member of, the Massachusetts Horticultural Society for over 40 years. Betty served as President of the Wellesley Garden Club, and was a judge and passionate participant in the yearly Boston Flower Show. In later years, Betty and Sumner became avid curlers at Brae Burn Country Club and then later at The Country Club. Betty was a frequent participant in Senior Ladies International Curling Club events in the U.S.A. and Canada. A Celebration of Life service will be held on Monday, 12/17/18, at 3:30 at the Unitarian Church in Wellesley Hills. A burial and private family ceremony will be at a later date.
