He peacefully departed this life on Tuesday, December 24th, 2013 following a brief illness.
Vernon loved the Lord and was committed to God’s work. A longtime member of the Greater Framingham Community Church (GFCC), in Framingham, MA, he accepted Jesus Christ as his Lord and Savior and was baptized in 1980. He was ordained a Deacon of the Church and served in a variety of ministries including the Usher, Men’s Christian Fellowship and Assimilation Ministries.
Vernon met and married Ruth Graham Johnson in 1972; they were married for 41 years--only last year renewing their vows of love and devotion to each other before God.
He was the consummate professional, devoted family man, loved to entertain his family and friends, connoisseur of music… especially jazz, and an avid football fan. Vernon and his wife Ruth were well known for the huge Super Bowl parties that they hosted throughout the years that served as a center of fellowship for family and friends across the Metrowest Community.
During one community organization fund raiser, Vernon demonstrated his love for jazz and his fondness for the works of Ray Charles by impersonating the musician and composer to the absolute delight of the audience.
One of his proudest moments of community service was the completion of the first Habitat house during his tenure as President of the Metrowest Habitat for Humanity.
Vernon received the Bachelor of Science degree from Shaw University, Raleigh, NC and went on to earn his Master’s in Business Administration (MBA) from Northeastern University in Boston, MA. He was a proud member of the Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc.
Vernon led an accomplished professional career earning positions of increased responsibility in Corporate America in the high technology and financial services industries. He enjoyed his work which included the former Digital Equipment Corporation, the Hewlett Packard Corporation and most recently, Citizens Bank where he received outstanding customer recognition for customer relationship management.
He leaves to cherish his memory a devoted wife of 41 years, Ruth Graham Johnson; three loving children, Michelle of Syracuse, NY, Eric-Austin (Claire) of Tampa, FL and Alycia of Bowie, MD; three siblings, Charles David Johnson (Carolyn), Leona Johnson Dawson, and Ernest Johnson; two brothers-in law, Alvin Graham (Eleanor) and Charles Graham; a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and friends.
Funeral services will be conducted Saturday, Jan. 4, 2013 at 10:00 am at the Greater Framingham Community Church, Franklin and Park Streets, Framingham. The Reverend J. Anthony Lloyd, Pastor, will officiate. A visitation will take place at the church Friday evening from 5:00 to 7:00 pm.
