Dr. Kenneth Ralph David Nurse, Ph.D.

Kenneth Ralph David Nurse, MSHRM, Ph.D., DM, Psy.D., of Spring Valley, NY, passed away on the evening of Monday, September 11, 2023 at the James J. Peters VA Medical Center in Bronx, NY due to complications with pancreatic cancer. He was 73 years old.

Kenneth was born on January 30, 1950 in Trinidad and Tobago to the late Henry Rudder and Beulah Elizabeth Vera Thomas.

While growing up in Trinidad and Tobago, Kenneth became fascinated with the United States Military after visiting the US in his early 20s.

After moving to the United States, at age 30, Kenneth enlisted and served in The United States Army Active and Reserve and the New York State National Guard. Kenneth was elated to pursue his dream to serve and began his Military career.

Over the span of 3 decades of Military service, Kenneth earned many accolades and awards, including: The Bronze Star Medal for Meritorious Service, Nato Medal for Excellence, Army Service Ribbons, Army Commendation Medal (Second Award), Armed Forces Service Medal, Army Achievement Medal (Second Award), NCO Professional Development Medal, Army Reserve Component Achievement Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Saudi Arabia Kuwaiti Liberation Medal, Kuwait Kuwaiti Liberation Medal, Saudi Arabia [Gold] Conspicuous Service Cross, New York State Nato Medal, Bosnia/Croatia Hungary Armed Forces Reserve Medal, Overseas Service Bar (3), Global War on Terrorism Service Medal and The Iraq Global War on Terrorism Expeditionary Medal.

Kenneth retired from service in 2014 from West Point Military Academy as a Command Sergeant Major.

Along with his many accomplishments, Kenneth held numerous degrees and many Ph.D’s. He was a Master of Science in Human Resources Management (MSHRM), a Doctorate of Philosophy (Ph.D.), Doctor of Management (DM), and a Doctor in Psychology (Psy.D.).

As a member of the American Legion Spring Valley Moscarella Post 199, Dr. Nurse served as Post Commander from 2019 to 2023. In 2020, he was Honored as the Rockland County Buffalo Soldier of the Year. He held the title of Chaplain for the Rockland County American Legion and the American Legion Department of New York 9th District and Children and Youth Committee. He was the New York State Veteran of the Year, and he was on the Spring Valley Village Memorial Day Service Committee. Committee Chairman for Gilbert Fontaine Street dedication. He was Knighted as a, "Knights Templar". A Sovereign Military Order of the Temple of Jerusalem and in 2021, Dr. Nurse was inducted into the New York State Veteran Hall of Fame.

Dr. Nurse’s mission was to always instill confidence and hope to all that he encountered. He was committed to pursuing his goals and dreams with great determination and humility. He fulfilled that mission with unwavering strength and extraordinary purpose.

Dr. Kenneth Ralph David Nurse is survived by his beloved wife, Roslyn Ann Nurse; loving daughters, Jasmine Nicole Nurse-King, Candy Denise Nurse, Stacy Donna Whitlock and Roseann Kathy Nurse; devoted sisters and brother, Roseanna Nurse, Cheryl-Ann De-La-Rosa, Felicia Sotilleo-Seaton and Arthur Sotilleo. He is also survived by his cherished grandchildren, Camille King, Preston King and Corrine King. He was predeceased by his beloved daughter Sandy Donna Nurse and his brothers Errol Renrick Rudder and Keith Randolph Nurse.

In lieu of flowers, The Nurse Family created a Charity Fundraiser for Dr. Nurse in support of research in the fight against pancreatic cancer.
