Mary Mendoni, beloved wife, sister, aunt, and friend, passed away peacefully, leaving behind a life marked by love, faith, and devotion to family.
Mary was born in Manhattan, New York, to William Diskin and Annie Kavanagh Diskin. She later moved with her family to the Bronx, where her life would forever be shaped by a love story that began in her teenage years. Mary and Joey were teenage sweethearts from the same neighborhood, and even after her family moved, Joey would ride his bicycle from Manhattan to see her—a devotion that foreshadowed a lifetime of love. They were married on April 4, 1964, and many who knew them would say they were the perfect couple.
Mary and Joey lived for many years in New City, New York, before retiring to Hilton Head Island, South Carolina, in 1994. Hilton Head became Mary’s happy place. She loved the beach, especially the simple pleasure of reading a good book by the ocean. She also had a special love for her many dogs over the years, who brought her great comfort and joy and were truly part of her family.
Mary retired from Columbia Presbyterian Hospital, where she worked as a secretary. A woman of deep and abiding faith, she was a devout member of Holy Family Parish in Hilton Head. She generously served her parish as a Eucharistic Minister and was actively involved in the St. Vincent de Paul Society and the Ladies’ Guild.
Mary was predeceased by her beloved husband, Joey Mendoni, on September 23, 2013; her brother, James Diskin; her sister, Lillian Diskin Burns; and her nephew Larry Kelly.
She is survived by her sister, Ann Diskin Kelly; her brother-in-law, Tom Burns; several nieces and nephews; her cherished cousins in Ireland, and her very close friends Nancy , Kathy and many others, all of whom she held close to her heart.
Mary will be remembered for her quiet strength, unwavering faith, deep love for her husband and family, her affection for her dogs, and her appreciation for life’s simple joys. She will be dearly missed and lovingly remembered by all who knew her.
In lieu of flowers donations can be made in Mary’s honor to St. Vincent de Paul c/o of Holy Family Catholic Church 24 Pope Ave., Hilton Head Island SC 29928.
