January 14, 1980 Michael and Cynthia Smith welcomed their son, Darren Michael. Darren was eager to make his appearance, born at 24 weeks weighing 1 lb. 14 oz. The doctors gave him a 10% chance of survival. Darren was resilient and a fighter from birth. After 3 months Mike and Cynthia brought their son home where he continued to thrive.
Darren learned to read at the early age of 4 and became an avid reader. His love of books continued throughout his life, reading all genres of books and especially history. Darren had a special talent for reading a book and listening to an audio book simultaneously. His second home was always the library. After graduating from Stephen F Austin High School, he attended the University of St. Thomas where he received a bachelor’s degree in Liberal Arts in Library Science in 2005.
Darren was a first-class trivia player who was unbeatable. He retained all manner of historical current facts. And could engage in explanations of little know details of any subject or topic that was imaginable.
Darren was a kind, caring, gentle and loving man who enjoyed target shooting, metal detecting, traveling, collecting and of course, reading. He liked visiting with friends and enjoyed hearing their opinions and interests. His sweet disposition and caring nature will be profoundly missed. He was completely disorganized in his organized way.
Darren was preceded in death by paternal grandparents, William Lee and Elizabeth (Moon) Smith and maternal grandparents, William B. and Mildred (Kolodziej) Smolik and uncles David Smolik and Elliott Bradshaw.
He is survived by his parents Michael L. and Cynthia (Smolik) Smith, brother Todd W. Smith, and niece Natalie N. Smith.
