Larry loved and served his country and its constitution in the United States Army, as an Avionics Tech in Vietnam with the 520th Trans Battalion at Phu Loi until transferred to Alaska with the 222d Aviation Battalion. He chose to leave the Army and make his home in the beautiful land he had fallen in love with. Fairbanks was a unique and welcoming city providing Larry opportunities to serve his community throughout the years: as Chairman of the Fairbanks Planning Commission, Road Commissioner, Rotary Club, Chamber of Commerce , a Campaign Manager, successful business owner, and compassionate neighbor. Larry, a great storyteller, thrived in this “Northern Exposure”-like community.
Larry and Lynne left management positions to open their own business, Baker and Baker, Booksellers, combining their energies and talents to build a successful business. Wanting to travel the U.S., Larry left Alaska and bookselling behind for the open road, with his wife and best friend, Lynne, his “always by his side” dog, Miss Ursula Isadora, Hondas and Harleys in tow, in his new his motor”home”.
His love of electronics grew with the computer age and remained his passion to this day- a bonified Linux expert, who loved everything about each new computer build. Hosting a Microsoft programmer was a highlight from the early days; a MS driver was written in the bookstore that enabled us to run the first CD version of Books in Print. Heavy Equipment, Truck and Auto repair fascinate him, both hands-on and keeping up with favorite YouTube channels. An active member of the Harley Owner’s Group and the local Gold Wing Road Riders Association, Larry loved riding and touring Alaska as well as “outside” (the lower 48). Country Western music was great for riding, while his love for the blues – classic to contemporary was always his first choice.
Larry’s word was his bond. Larry lived his values, always doing what he believed to be the right thing. He honored all oaths, pledges, and commitments made. He loved his family and was devoted to his wife, always placing her wants and needs before his own.
Larry will be dearly missed by his wife of 47 years, Lynne Anne; his loving siblings; sister, Jean; brothers, Neal, Boyd, and Bruce; and a host of nieces and nephews, and friends.
Larry was preceded in death by his parents, Cecil and Doris; and brothers, Richard and Charles.
Private Family gatherings to remember all the ways Larry touched our lives will take place later this year.
