Nancy Hugghins Schmitt, age 84, passed away peacefully on May 11, 2025, after a life well-lived and full of character.
Born in Houston, Texas, Nancy lived with conviction and a personality that left a lasting impression. She wasn’t one to fade into the background—she had strong opinions and wasn’t shy about sharing them. With her quick wit and direct style, she was someone people remembered. You always knew where Nancy stood, and she expected the same in return.
Nancy was the wife of the late Stephen John Schmitt, and together they built a family. She is survived by her daughter Karen Murphy (married to Jim), her son Kevin Schmitt (married to Holly), her sister Dolores Manning, her grandchildren—Jimmy Murphy (married to Erin) and their son Walker, John Murphy (married to Abby) and their daughter Audrey, Will Murphy, Lauren Schmitt, and Kyle Schmitt. She followed their lives closely and always had something to say—often funny, occasionally pointed, but always coming from a place of deep interest.
Nancy dedicated her life to her home and family, running a tight ship with a sharp eye for detail. She valued order, tradition, and doing things the right way—her way. Her home was tidy, her style timeless, and her standards well known to those around her.
A dedicated golfer, hands-on gardener, and longtime regular at Lopez Mexican Restaurant, Nancy enjoyed simple pleasures—especially when paired with a margarita and good company.
Nancy had a sharp edge and a strong spirit. She didn’t go in for small talk or false niceties, but for those she held close, she showed unwavering loyalty and care. Her way of expressing love might have been unconventional at times, but it was steady and unmistakable.
She will be remembered for her boldness, her humor, and the way she made sure the people around her stayed on their toes.
A small family service will be held to honor her life. In lieu of flowers, the family encourages you to raise a glass (margarita preferred), tend to your garden (she’d tell you it needs it), or donate to the Sugar Land Legacy Foundation Animal Shelter.
