

Gloria VanDyke Dixon passed away Tuesday, August 17, 2010 at 9:51 pm in a Lafayette Hospital following a lengthy illness. She had resided in Sulphur since 1946 and was a resident of High Hope Care Center for 1 ½ years.
Gloria was born March 13, 1926 in Shreveport, LA to Madolyne and Robert VanDyke.
She was an active member of the First Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) in Sulphur serving as an elder for the past 60 years. She was a past president of the Church board and served on numerous committees not only on a local level but state and national levels. She was the first woman moderator on the state level of Christian Churches (Disciples of Christ). She was an active member of Christian Women’s Fellowship.
Gloria was a member and past worthy matron of Eastern Star Love Chapter 209, Sulphur. She worked along with her husband in the Maplewood Hollywood Lions Club and Sulphur Lion’s Club serving in the auxiliary. Gloria served on district, state and national levels in the Lion’s Club.
She was a civilian employee of Chennault Air Force Base in the 1950’s and early 1960’s. She was one of the owners of the Fabric House Inc, Lake Charles, Tri City Auto Parts Inc, Sulphur and Western Auto, Westlake.
Gloria’s hobbies were decorating, sewing, playing bridge and keeping her family in line.
She is survived by her husband John P. Dixon of almost 67 years and 2 daughters Charlyne “Char” Hebert and husband Robert and Cathy Marcantel and husband Joey; grandchildren and their spouses Glenn Hebert, Stacy Hebert and Dean Peloquin , Scotty and Kim Marcantel, Lori and Tim Miller, Dennis Marcantel, Jon and Chris Jones, Paul and Haley Marcantel, Patrick and Suzzanna Marcantel; 15 great grandchildren and a great great grandson. She is also survived by her sister Dana Jones and brother Jim Van Dyke and numerous nieces and nephews as well as adopted grandchildren.
Gloria was preceded in death by her parents and a brother Richard “Dick” VanDyke.
Her funeral service will be at 2:00 pm, Friday, August 20, 2010 from First Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) of Sulphur under direction of Hixson Sulphur Memorial Funeral Home. Rev. Mike Dickson will officiate. Burial will be in Mimosa Pines Cemetery. Visitation will be in the funeral home from 2 until 8 pm on Thursday and from 9 am until 1:30 on Friday.
Pallbearers will be Glenn Hebert, Tim Miller, Chris Jones, Tyrone Jones, Dean Peloquin, Dennis, Patrick and Paul Marcantel. Honorary pallbearers will be Joseph Miller, Scotty Marcantel, Mike Consunado and Aidan Kilgore.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the First Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) Sulphur, Louisiana Lions Cripple Childrens Home Leesville or the Shriners Hospital of Shreveport.
