

J.C. was a native of Cleveland, Texas, and had been a resident of Sulphur for the last 65 years. He was a member, greeter and deacon of Maplewood First Baptist Church, and past member and deacon of Central Baptist and Olivet Baptist Churches. J.C. proudly served his country during World War II in the U.S. Army in the 34th Bomb Group. J.C. was self-employed for 40 years, working in the oil field and becoming a well-respected mentor to colleagues and friends. He enjoyed spending time in his woodshop and was well-known for his unique woodworking skills and creating whimsical folk art and birdhouses for neighbors and friends. He was also an avid gardener and had a great affinity for the outdoors. He liked spending time working and enjoying country life on the family farm and tapping his foot to bluegrass and gospel music. He cherished spending time with his family and friends.
His loving survivors include his wife of 72 years, Marie (Benton) Young of Sulphur; daughter, Sharon Grindol and husband, John, of Sneedville, Tennessee; and two grandchildren, Jeremy Kerr, and Tamberly Conway and her husband Warren. He is preceded in death by his siblings, Hubert Young, Edith Bryan, John Alton Young, Clark Young, Allie Mae Stubblefield and Robert Lee Young. His parents, Napoleon and Nettie Young, were from Cleveland, Texas.
Visitation is from 4-8 P.M. on Thursday, December 11 at Hixson-Sulphur Memorial Funeral Home. Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Friday, December 12, in Hixson-Sulphur Memorial Funeral Home, with visitation beginning at 8 a.m. A reception at Maplewood First Baptist Church in Sulphur, to celebrate J.C.’s lovely life, will follow the graveside services. The Rev. Charley Watson and Dr. Ronnie Burke will officiate. Burial will be in Mimosa Pines Cemetery South in Carlyss.
