

Robert, a Mississippi native, resided in Johnson Bayou for 61 years before moving to Carlyss in 2008. He retired as an Operator from the Louisiana Department of Transportation after 25 years of service. He was a guide for Crain Brothers Hunting Camp for many years. He enjoyed working cows, hunting, and loved to dance.
He was preceded in death by three daughters, Dorothy LaBove, Delores LaBove, and Margaret Saltzman; three great grandchildren; three sisters, Julia Ryals, Mary Burge and Katie Evans; and three brothers, Jim, Colon, and J.B. Merritt.
Survivors include his wife of 69 years, Velma Menard Merritt; son, Michael James Merritt and wife Theresa of Johnson Bayou; daughter, Helen Landry and husband, Bryon of Hathaway; sister, Edna Paige, 93, of Waverlyn, MS; 17 grandchildren; 23 great grandchildren, and 5 great-great grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held at 10 am Friday, May 15, 2015 in Hixson-Sulphur Memorial Funeral Home. Rev. Jack Gandy will officiate. Interment will follow in Head of the Hollow Cemetery of Johnson Bayou. Visitation will be 3 – 8 pm Thursday and resume 8 am. Friday until time of service at 10am.
