

Sulphur- Roland Moss entered this life on Friday, May 13, 1938, born to the late Ignace and Gladys Jolet Moss. He was a lifelong resident of Sulphur and graduated from Sulphur High School and attended McNeese College. There he met and later married Sondra Miller of Lake Charles. They recently celebrated 58 years of marriage in April.
He served eight years as a member of the National Guard at Fort Polk. Early on, he had 13 years of real estate and banking before opening RJ Moss Enterprises which celebrates 46 years next month. As past National Director of LA Collectors Assoc., he helped put in place the laws and regulations that govern collection agencies. He was a dedicated 51 year member of Optimist Clubs of Lake Charles and Sulphur and chairman for 29 years of the Optimist Celebrity Golf Tournament which raised over $1.4 million for local charities. Honored with the Optimist of the Year in 14 different years, Roland has held every statewide office including Governor of the State. He also earned 100 member pin for sponsorship of new members.
A member of Sulphur Rotary, Apartment Owners Assoc., the Credit Professionals, and Chief Executive Assoc., Maplewood Middle School PTO, the Sulphur High Football Boosters, and Bayou Oaks Country Club. A board member of American Red Cross where he received National Honors by the President of the United States, A Boys Village board member, past chair of State Special Olympics, and a charter member of Maplewood Property Owners Assoc., and also a member of McNeese Cowboy Club. A 5th Year scholarship in his name is given annually for McNeese Basketball. He was also named Citizen of the Year by West Cal Chamber of Commerce. He was King of Krewe of Cosmos in 1975 and Krewe de la Famille in 2015.
Roland was "Pop" to so many more than his own and a diehard Dallas Cowboy fan. He believed in giving back to the community that afforded him so much opportunity.
Those left to cherish his memories, pranks, jokes, and continual love are his loving wife, Sondra Moss; his children, Melissa Moss, Stuart Moss and wife, Ginger, and Brendan Moss and wife, Emanuela, all of Sulphur; grandchildren, Shelby Moss, Candyce Moss-Brignac, Kory Moss, Sam Moss, Madison Moss and Gabriella Moss; great-grandchildren, Baylor and Kylor Brignac, Karson and Abriella Moss, Addlynn and Addyson Moss, and soon to be Audra Brignac; his siblings, Dub Moss and wife, Shirley, Gayle David and husband, Butch, Gerald Moss and Vicki; and many nieces, nephews, and extended family members. He is preceded in death by his sister, Lois Petrie.
His funeral will be at 2 p.m. Monday, October 19, in Maplewood First Baptist Church. The Rev. Eric Hodge and Pastor Steve Shirley will officiate. Burial will be in Mimosa Pines Cemetery North in Sulphur under the direction of Hixson-Sulphur Memorial Funeral Home. Visitation will be held in the church from 5-9 p.m. Sunday and will resume at 12:30 p.m. until the time of service Monday in the church.
