Born in Chicago, IL on September 7th, 1935, Dale grew up the son of Charles and Kathryn DeWitt, and older brother to Claire. Dale earned a bachelor’s degree in theology from Wheaton College and bachelor’s degree in theology from Milwaukee Bible Institute. He then completed a master’s degree in New Testament Studies at Wheaton College and a Ph.D. from Andrews University in Old Testament Studies and Languages.
Driven by an unquenchable thirst for knowledge, Dale was both a lifelong learner and a devoted teacher. For 42 years, he taught Theology and Biblical Languages at Grace Christian University, faithfully sharing his pursuit of truth and his rigorous, careful reasoning with generations of students. His expansive intellect, insatiable curiosity, and sharp critical thinking shaped not only his classroom but also his life’s work. Grounded in deeply held theological convictions, he spent a lifetime exploring the intersection of theology, science, and social justice—continually seeking evidence of their harmony and compatibility.
He delighted in life’s simple and elegant pleasures—fancy family dinners, classical music, a perfectly roasted cashew, and ice cream straight from the container. He loved staying active on his bike, gardening and landscaping, and enjoyed friendly competition over games of dominoes and Scrabble. He also held a lifelong love for Rocky Mountain National Park, returning time and again to draw inspiration from its majestic beauty.
Dale is survived by his wife of 68 years, Mina (Reich) DeWitt, whom he affectionately called “Suze”, his sister, Claire Ann Voetberg, his children, David DeWitt (Robin), Bradley DeWitt (Beth Ann), and Julia Krump (Thomas), his grandchildren Shanda DeWitt (Ryan), Dylan DeWitt (Brittany), Griffin DeWitt, Roman DeWitt (Bojana), Weston DeWitt (Shelby), Chloe Garcia (Linda), Seth Henshaw, great-grandson, Nicholas Sumner DeWitt, and great-grand-twins coming in the Spring.
Dale will be remembered for his steadfast devotion to his faith and family, his lifelong commitment to learning and teaching, and his wonderfully quirky yet deeply tender spirit.
In lieu of flowers, we encourage you to honor Dale’s legacy of learning and teaching by seeking out new knowledge, pushing beyond the boundaries of the known, and sharing these insights with others. This, we believe, would be the best tribute to his remarkable life.
A private graveside service will be held for Dale at Sunland Memorial Park, 15826 N Del Webb Blvd, Sun City Arizona.
