Don was born on June 5, 1938 to Harold and Marie Uptagrafft. He attended Mitchell High School. He married Kay Thompson on August 4th, 1959. Don has one son Craig (Val) Uptagrafft of Sioux Falls, SD, and 4 daughters: Dianne (Jeff) Pasco of Hutchinson, MN, Suzanne (Doug) Flittie of Peoria, AZ, Brenda (Mike) Wieczorek of Bozeman, MT and Lisa (Jeff) Hohn of Peoria, AZ, 17 grandchildren: Travis (Sara) Uptagrafft, Heather Uptagrafft, Kristen (Adam) Sanderson, Amber (Trevor) Potts, Ashley (Richard) Uptagrafft, Seth Pasco, Kendra (Mitch) Kudrna, Sam (Catie) Pasco, Jordan (Jessica) Flittie, Megan Flittie, Katelyn (Corey) Sipe, Nichole (Jason) Goodyear, Shelby (Daniel) Misner, Brook Wieczorek, Jessica (Marc) Wells, Jennifer (Mike) Johnson and Joshua (Kayla) Hohn, 18 great grandchildren and 1 step great grandchild.
He owned Dog-n-Suds in Mitchell, SD and managed many Village Inns, in Denver, Colorado, Gillette, Wyoming and Arizona. Don and Kay then bought a Jani-King franchise, in Tucson, AZ and ran that until his retirement.
Don had many hobbies, he had a love for remodeling, hiking with his family, golfing and watching his beloved Denver Broncos and University of Arizona men's basketball team. Many happy memories were made in Vail, Colorado when his kids and grandchildren would spend a week hiking and white water rafting, and celebrating his and Kay's 40th, 45th and 50th wedding anniversary.
Grateful for having shared his life are his wife Kay, son Craig, daughters Dianne, Suzanne, Brenda and Lisa, and his many grandchildren and great grandchildren. Don is survived by his brothers: Wayne Uptagrafft and Richard Uptagrafft, sisters: Darlene (Wilbur) Hohn, Doris (Ron) Bender and Ruth Wilson, brother-in-law Rodney Klinger and many nieces and nephews. His is preceded in death by his parents Harold and Marie Uptagrafft, brothers: Robert Uptagrafft and Harold Uptagrafft and one sister Joyce Klinger, brother-in-law Jim Wilson, sister-in-laws: Ila Uptagrafft, Marilyn Uptagrafft and Sid Uptagrafft.
