It is with deep sorrow that we announce the passing of Howard Eugene Swofford Jr., who passed away on February 12, 2025. He was a beloved father, grandfather, and friend, known for his resilience, friendliness, loyalty, and sense of humor.
Born on March 4, 1944, in Renton, WA, Howard—affectionately known as “Howdy”—graduated from Renton High School, Class of 1962. After a brief time at Bemidji State University, he joined the U.S. Navy, where he served during the Vietnam War, transporting troops. He was proud of his Good Conduct Medal and worked as an electrician on the ship’s communication system.
In 1970, Howard married Susan “Soozie” Marie Smith, and together they had two sons, Jason Samuel (1972) and Michael Howard (1974). Tragically, Michael passed away in 1976 due to spinal meningitis. Howard and Soozie made their home in Des Moines, WA, where they built a life together until her passing from cancer in 1998 at the age of 50.
After grieving his loss, Howard found love again and married Shirley Jean Wilson in 2004. The couple relocated to Arizona, near Phoenix, where they enjoyed traveling and spending time with family and friends during their retirement years. Shirley predeceased Howard on January 1, 2025.
Howard was a devoted father, grandfather, and husband, cherishing every moment with his loved ones. He is survived by his son, Jason Samuel Swofford; his wife, Sheila; and his grandchildren, Katherine (Katie), Michael, Nathaniel (Nathan), and Gabriel (Gabe), who will forever hold his memory in their hearts.
A funeral service will be held on February 24, 2025, at First Baptist Church Sun City West to honor and celebrate his life. Additionally, a memorial service will be held at a later date in Washington State, before his interment alongside Soozie and their son Michael.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to First Baptist Church Sun City West in his memory.
His love, strength, and presence will be deeply missed but never forgotten.
