The legendary Jack Colby peacefully passed away on April 24, 2026, surrounded by his loving family in the home he called paradise. Jack was born to Charles and Darla on August 21, 1961, in Albuquerque, New Mexico.
Jack served his country as a parachute packer in the U.S. Air Force. He took personal responsibility for the safety of those around him, and in return, everyone knew they could rely on him to get the job done right. Jack continued his career as a tactical trainer, an adventure that took him overseas where he discovered new passions and gained invaluable experiences. When he returned home to Roswell, he spent much of his time helping the Chaves County CASA Program with fundraisers and other handiwork. This was especially meaningful to Jack, as he loved giving his time to a greater cause.
Jack earned his legendary status through many unique talents. He created custom, personalized cards for all his loved ones on birthdays, holidays, and special occasions—never missing anyone. Jack loved upholstery and had a gift for turning trash into treasure. He took pride in making fun, custom Halloween costumes and holiday décor. Jack truly was a jack-of-all-trades, skilled in plumbing, electrical work, mechanics, landscaping, and carpentry—you name it. He had a remarkable way of bringing joy to others through his creativity.
After moving to Arizona to live near his beloved grandchildren, Jack had the chance to slow down. He loved watching the birds and bunnies at his Sun City paradise. He always took time to watch the sunrise and sunset, finding art in the clouds. Jack loved being outdoors, gardening, and growing plants.
Grandpa Jack adored his grandchildren and his grandpup. Daliyah, King, Zayne, Izabella, Alivia, Azalea, and Christopher will always remember the time Grandpa took to play with them. Together, they built amazing projects like fairy gardens, bird churches, and a treehouse. Grandpa Jack also kept an iconic bin of McDonald’s toys that will always be remembered. The grandkids described their cherished Grandpa Jack as brave, fun, silly, understanding, and relatable.
Jack will be remembered for many things, but even strangers will remember his love for the 49ers and his legacy as “Sourdough Jack.”
A celebration of Jack’s life will be held on May 9th, 2026, at the family home, where we will garden in his honor, eat his favorite foods, and reminisce about our wonderful, wonderful Jack!
