

James "Jim" Robert Howell was born in Cold Spring, NY on March 15, 1939, to Edward Wills Howell and Ida Elizabeth Kent Howell. Jim grew up in Glenham, NY, along with his brothers, Thomas and Roger, who preceded him in death. Jim proudly served in the United States Navy as a submariner. After his naval service he went on to obtain an Electrical Engineering degree from the University of Vermont. He was employed with IBM in Poughkeepsie, NY as an electrical engineer for 34 years.
Jim is survived by his loving wife of 39 years, Judy Howell, and his three children, Sonia Talman of Virginia, Dawn Hart (Brian) of North Carolina, and Eric Howell of New York. He is also survived by his three stepchildren, John Quinn (Yeon) of Texas, Jeffrey Quinn (Maribel) of New York, and Joseph Quinn of New York. His legacy continues through his grandchildren: Crystle (Chris), Louis (Stephanie), Allison, Shane, and Julia, as well as his great-grandchildren: Celina, Mia, Sierra, Michael, Mason, and Margo, and many nieces and nephews. Jim is also remembered by his sister-in-law Janis McLean of Sun City, Arizona.
Jim was an avid fly fisherman, hunter, and archer. He enjoyed sharing his passion by teaching and mentoring others in these disciplines and loved to spend time in the outdoors with those he loved. He was also an excellent golfer and played regularly often times with his brother-in-law, Don McLean. He also bowled in many leagues over the years. He was an active member of the Ventana Lakes Italian American Club as well as the Sun City Fraternal Order of Elks Lodge 2559.
Jim spent his life as an example to many and was devoted to his family, his friends and his country.
There will be a celebration of life on December 23, 2025, at 11 AM at the Sunland Funeral Home in the Lakeside Chapel.
