Richard was born on November 16, 1954 in Portland, Oregon. He was a gifted student, naturally talented artist, and an accomplished pianist. He had a passion for horses and purchased his first horse with his paper route money when he was just ten years old. He won numerous awards for horsemanship and worked training horses in Dressage. He attended Oregon State University and received a Bachelor of Science Degree in Business Administration in 1977. He also worked briefly in the banking industry.
Richard was diagnosed with Schizophrenia at the age of 24. He lived the best life possible. He relocated to Arizona in 1982 and worked for Motorola as a Transistor Quality and Control Technician for seventeen years. He lived independently enjoying books, classic movies, walks to the library, and especially spending time with his family. He faced the many challenges in his life with grace, strength, and resilience. He had an easy smile - never complaining and always looking forward with hope for the elusive cure. His life mattered and we will miss him dearly.
Richard was preceded in death by his parents, Charles and Sarah Dawson, and is survived by his brothers Dave Dawson, Steve Dawson (Mary Bowe), and his sister Debbie Dawson (Tom Gilchrist). Numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins also survive him.
