Warren Eugene Van Norman, born June 26, 1923, on a ranch in Rock County, Nebraska, passed away in Scottsdale, Arizona on December 17, 2021, at the age of 98 surrounded by his loving family. Warren was the second of three sons of Samuel “Vern” and Josephine “Josie” (née Linke) Van Norman, of Bassett, Nebraska. Warren graduated from Rock County High School in 1939, attended Wayne State Teachers College, in Wayne, Nebraska, and graduated from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln in 1943, and the University of Nebraska College of Law in 1948.
Warren practiced law in Oshkosh, Nebraska from 1948 until 1955, serving as County Attorney for five of those years before moving to Washington, D.C. to become Administrative Assistant to Congressman A.L. Miller, of Nebraska. While working on “the Hill,” he met and married a fellow congressional aide, Mary Wilma Stoddard, his cherished wife, and best friend of 46 years, who preceded him in death on October 10, 2002. Warren also practiced law in Omaha, Nebraska and, for a period of three years, served as a trust officer in an Omaha bank. From 1964 until his retirement in 1981, Warren served as General Counsel and Corporate Secretary of American Investment Company in St. Louis, Missouri.
Warren held several offices in the Republican Party and the American Society of Corporate Secretaries and was a member of the state bar associations of Nebraska and Missouri and the Bar of the Supreme Court of the United States. Warren was a Navy veteran of World War Two.
Warren was an accomplished attorney, respected and admired by his peers, and always conducted himself with the utmost integrity. Warren had a mischievous and dry sense of humor, but never judgmental. Warm, welcoming, and steady of character, Warren was the last direct connection with a lot of family history. He played a mean trumpet in swing bands as a young man, was an outstanding golfer, and a diehard Huskers fan.
Wilma and Warren’s two sons, Barry (Amira), of Scottsdale, and Scott (Denise), of Durham, North Carolina, were the focus of love and pride to their happy family life. In 1998, Wilma and Warren moved from St. Louis to Sun City, Arizona to afford him more time to play golf and enjoy the advantages of a warmer climate. In addition to his wife, Wilma, Warren was preceded in death by his son, Scott, and his two brothers, Robert Vernon and Raymond. Warren is survived by his son, Barry, and several nieces and nephews.
Interment next to his beloved wife will be Wednesday, December 29, 2021, at 11:00 a.m. at Sunland Memorial Park, Mortuary and Cremation Center in Sun City, Arizona. Plans for a larger memorial gathering will be announced later.
