Marlys was born on March 12, 1933, to Louis and Alvina Thomas in Moorhead, Minnesota. As a child, she enjoyed swinging on the tree with her favorite Betsy Wetsy doll. After graduating high school in 1951, she attended and graduated from Dakota Business College in 1952 with her communications degree.
Marlys was a brilliant and dedicated secretary majority of her working life, with spelling skills that could win any spelling bee and could put a librarian to shame. She loved to read, write and research, she was always well-informed. She was full of mental prowess, in-depth knowledge, and organizational skills.
Marlys was characterized as a demure, bright blue-eyed woman with dimples that were beloved by anyone who saw her smile. She credited her ability to stay in good shape throughout her life by her love for walking. There was not a cup of coffee, shopping mall or piece of chocolate she didn’t love.
She married John (Jack) Richard Burkett and their marriage led to birth of her beloved children Scott and Nancy Burkett. Her greatest joy in life was her family. She is preceded in death by her parents: Louis and Alvina Thomas, brothers: Aubrey (Catherine), Walter, Robert (Rollande) and Roy Thomas.
She is survived by her children Scott Burkett and Nancy Burkett and two grandchildren Kayleen (Nancy) and Shane (Scott). Her sister-in-law, Carol Thomas.
Very heartfelt and special thanks to Vineyard Park of Surprise and Hospice of the Valley for all their giving, caring, and amazing attention they gave to Marlys while she was in their care. We are extremely grateful you came into our lives.
