It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Alan. He was surrounded by family in his final hours. Predeceased by his loving wife Shirley in 2002, he leaves behind his children Gordon (Ann), Leslie (Ken) Sandeen, Sandra (Sean) Polson, and Robert (Jenny). Survived by his grandchildren; Melanie, Devon, Heather, Taryn, Alexandra, and Troy; as well as great-granddaughter, Abbygail.
Retired as a captain of the V.F.D. after 32 years, he lived the Canadian dream of playing hockey in the NHL original 6, leaving Regina to play with the Boston Bruins in 1943 - 1944. Alan continued to play professional hockey until 1952. He then joined the Vancouver Fire Department and was instrumental in starting the Firefighters Hockey League which he coached for many years. The Hockey League trophy is now named the Al Rittinger Trophy.
Alan married the love of his life and best friend, Shirley Evoy, in 1949. During their 53 years together, he and Shirley devoted their lives to raising their four children and were overjoyed to have shared their lives with their grandchildren. Dad lived to see the addition of his great-grandchild to his loving family.
The family would like to thank the dedicated staff at Mountain View Manor, Dr. Long, Dr. Jetzer, and Dr. Adam. Also a sincere thank you to retired and active Vancouver fire fighters, dear friends, and extended family.
A memorial service will be held on Friday, December 29th, 2017, at 2:00pm, at Victory Memorial Park Funeral Centre – 14831 28th Avenue, Surrey, BC.
Donations to either the Burn Fund Centre, Delta Hospital Auxiliary, or Variety - The Children's Charity, would be greatly appreciated.
