Suddenly and without warning on March 6, 2015, Andy Eng passed away at the age of 53. His family thanks all the emergency services who made heroic efforts to revive him.
Andy was born on March 27, 1961 in Uxbridge, Ontario. He is survived by his wife Kristina, his daughter Emma (15) and his son Ben (12), and also by his mother Julia Eng (nee Chiu), his sisters Gloria Eng and Christina Eng, and his brother Steve Eng. He was predeceased by his father Terry Eng.
Andy came west to take a degree in Marine Biology at UBC, where he was also a proud DEKE. He fell in love with the west coast and stayed in BC. He loved the ocean and was never happier than when scuba diving or puttering around on the shore collecting oysters and clams for his sumptuous seafood chowder. He said that his family’s vacation home in Bowser on Vancouver Island was his favorite place on earth.
Later Andy retrained in computer science and worked for many years as a Computer Systems Administrator, for Boston Pizza, the Overwaitea Food Group and most recently and very happily for B2Gold. B2Gold gave him the opportunity to travel to the Philippines, Namibia and Nicaragua on behalf of the company.
Andy was a wonderful cook, and poured his creativity into the family’s dinners and special occasion feasts which he planned and made for 20 years. His recipes were much sought after by friends and his barbecue sauce was even published in Company’s Coming. A former director of the Vancouver Mycological Society, every spring and fall found Andy in the woods hunting for edible mushrooms, with delicious cooking results.
A trivia whiz, Andy had an amazing ability to remember random facts and figures. He had a passion for the NFL and through exhaustive and diligent research knew more about each team and player than possibly anyone else on earth!
Andy is mourned and missed by his extended Eng family in Canada, San Francisco and New York, Kristina’s extended Pantoulias and Wall families, and by all his friends, DEKE brothers and colleagues.
Rest in peace Andy.
