Passed away October 5, 2021 (age 87) after 2 weeks in Burnaby General Hospital’s Palliative Care.
Born Antonie Katharina Muschal, Toni and her sister were raised within the medieval walled city of Rottweil, in southwest Germany. In 1953, age 18, Toni left her family behind and immigrated to Canada to join fiancé Rolf Maurer, who had immigrated to Canada a year earlier. Soon after arriving in Vancouver, Rolf and Toni married and together started what became a successful building maintenance company. In 1957, they purchased their home on Sierra Drive, shortly after which, Sylvia was born and then Thomas in 1959.
A devoted wife, mother and grandmother, Toni was also physically strong and never shied away from hard work. She was a passionate homemaker as evidenced by her immaculate home and garden, baking and entertaining. Toni also greatly enjoyed nature while hiking in the mountains and in 1964, Rolf and she began the difficult task of building their cabin on Chain Lake outside of Princeton. After completion of their summer home, were many years of enjoyment before Rolf predeceased her in May 2006.
In March 2021, after suffering a serious heart attack, a very weakened Toni returned home. In May she was diagnosed with cancer.
Toni is lovingly remembered by son Thomas Maurer, daughter Sylvia (Ray) Decenzo, grandchildren Ryan and Scott Decenzo and her nieces, nephews, friends and neighbours.
A memorial bench for Rolf and Toni sits at Burnaby Mountain Park overlooking the Indian Arm of Burrard Inlet.
As requested by Toni, no memorial service will be held.
