Carina Sernicula Pineda

Carina was born on November 7, 1961, in Hamtic, Antique, Philippines. One of ten children, she grew up in a close-knit family alongside her five brothers and four sisters. She was predeceased by her beloved parents, Francisco Sernicula Sr. and Adelia Sernicula.

Carina earned a bachelor’s degree in Economics in the Philippines. At the age of 24, she left her homeland and moved to Hong Kong, where she worked as a nanny for approximately ten years. In January 1997, she began a new chapter in her life when she immigrated to Canada and made the Lower Mainland her home.

For her first five years in Canada, Carina worked in Langley as a live-in caregiver for one family. During that time, she continued her education, earning her Early Childhood Educator certificate as well as additional certification specializing in infant and toddler care.

As Carina established her new life in Canada, she earned her driver’s licence and bought her own car; milestones that reflected her fierce independence and determination. Years later, she passed that confidence along by teaching one of her nieces to drive.

Carina made her home in South Surrey, where she lived with family and worked at a local daycare. She continued her career in childcare until her passing. Her dedication, compassion and natural leadership eventually led to her promotion to Infant and Toddler Supervisor. Caring for others was not simply Carina’s profession; it was a reflection of who she was.

Over the years, three of Carina’s four sisters made Canada their home, allowing them to remain close and build their lives together. Carina proudly became a Canadian citizen, embracing Canada as her home while always maintaining a deep connection to her Filipino roots. She was also a much-loved aunt to her numerous nieces and nephews, each of whom held a special place in her heart.

Carina had an immeasurable impact on everyone fortunate enough to know her. She gave so much of herself to make the lives of others better, always putting their needs before her own. Fiercely independent and a true leader, Carina possessed a strength and determination that inspired those around her. She formed many lasting friendships and was deeply loved by all who had the privilege of calling her a friend.

Carina was an exceptionally talented and versatile cook and baker. Whether preparing one of her much-loved Filipino dishes or something entirely different, everything she made was delicious. She was especially gifted at baking and decorating beautiful cakes. Through her food, Carina shared her culture, brought people together and expressed her love for those around her.

Carina was looking forward to celebrating her 65th birthday in November and beginning an exciting new chapter in her life. She had recently completed renovations to her home in the Philippines and planned to return there in April. She looked forward to dividing her time between Canada and the Philippines, spending six months in each country while remaining close to the people and places she loved in both.

Carina’s deep faith guided her throughout her life, and her love and devotion to her family knew no bounds. To those who loved her, Carina truly was one in a billion.

Her sudden passing has left an emptiness in the hearts and lives of all those she touched. Although her loss is beyond measure, her loved ones find comfort in knowing that she has gone to be with her Heavenly Father and is now their angel watching over them.

A Funeral Mass will be held on Tuesday, August 25, 2026, from 11:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. at Good Shepherd Church, 2250 150 Street, South Surrey.

Those attending are invited to bring a personal note, letter or special memory for Carina. A special place will be provided at the service to collect these messages of love so that they may remain with her as she is laid to rest.
