It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Dan on December 26 at Peace Arch Hospital.
Left to treasure his memory are his loving wife Deirdre; children Darren (Jen) and Dallas (Jason); grandchildren: Austin, Taylor, Jaxon and Finn; great-grandchildren Braelynn and Harley; siblings John and Ralph. Predeceased by his parents Stanley and Hazel, as well as his brother Rod.
Dan was a member of the Royal Canadian Navy. He served from 1958 – 1963 in Ottawa, Aklavik, Inuvik and Moncton. He worked for the Government of Canada in the External Affairs department from 1962 -1969 with postings to New Delhi, India and Accra, Ghana and West Africa. He later worked as a Financial Advisor from 1970 to retirement with Freedom 55 Financial.
Dan was an active member and instructor with the White Rock Power and Sail Squadron and was a Commander of the squadron from 1986 – 1988. He helped build the Royal Canadian Marine Search and Rescue Station 5 (Crescent Beach) into a first class, award winning unit. He was instrumental in creating Semiahmoo Peninsular Marine Rescue Society, a fundraising arm of CCGA Unit 5 Crescent Beach. For a time, Dan also served on the Board of Governors, at Canadian Coast Guard Auxiliary Pacific Division, as a Director.
He enjoyed many, many years boating on the “Sea Savage” with Deirdre and family in the Gulf Islands. Playing his guitar and singing was his passion, whether for his own enjoyment or around a campfire with everyone joining in. Dan was a man larger than life, with a personality to go with it. He will truly be missed by everyone he touched.
A Celebration of Life will be held on April 22 at 11:00am at Victory Memorial Park 14831 28 Avenue, Surrey. Please consider a donation to the Semiahmoo Peninsular Marine Rescue Society (SPMRS) in lieu of flowers would be appreciated. Donations can be made at: rcmsar5.ca or BOX 45583 – 2397 King George Blvd. Surrey, BC V4A5A4.
