Born in Belfast, Northern Ireland, January 17 1931, he went to be with the Lord January 22 2022
-David was the fourth of nine children born to John and Mary Carrigan
- He was the last of the nine to pass away. He truly had an interesting childhood and could recall
so many memories and tales of growing up on the streets of Belfast.
- In his early years David worked as a machinist at James Mackie and sons Belfast and boy could
he tell you stories of all the things that went on there. He could keep you amused for hours.
- He was also an active member of the J. Creed Meredith Masonic Lodge, where he joined in 1969
and became master in 1982. The Masonic Order proved to be a big part of his life and opened
many doors for David, providing him the opportunity to make friends and, in turn, gave him the
opportunity to help others to grow in their lives. He was so well respected and such good
company, he always had that huge smile and a twinkle in his eye.
DAVID’S LIFE AND TIMES
N Ireland:
-David married Meta Foster on March 4th 1953 they had 3 children Jim, Brenda & Alison all
born in Belfast Northern Ireland
- Sadly Meta passed away at a young age in October 1973, leaving David to raise his kids as a
single Dad, with the help of a loving family.
Canada:
-His son Jim married Betty in 1976 and with their first son Jim Jr ( born 1977) emigrated to
Vancouver in 1978.
- David and the girls followed to join them a few years later, emigrating in February 1982.
- In Vancouver Jim introduced his dad to some friends that he knew were Masons. This was
music to David’s ears. He joined the lodge and was an active member of Joppa Lodge
White Rock, BC until his health prevented him from attending as regularly as he would have
liked. David received his 50 year long-service Jewel on January 14 2019, which he was very
proud of. It was a tremendous achievement, one that so many don’t reach.
- One of the first lodge members he met at his initial lodge meeting, Malcolm Campbell a fellow
N Irishman, offered him a job for a week at Vancouver Parks Board. That week lasted almost
13.5 years. David was keen to take on anything, from the being pool man to the Zamboni driver
(Trout Lake), you name it, he did it.
- St Andrews Newton became his church home and he could always be found on Sunday morning
in the back pew. Everyone always stopped to say hello and of course he never failed to have a
kind word, little joke or just his big smile. Over this past 2 years he would listen to Sunday
service on his phone and always had questions after service. David never missed a chance to
have a chat.
- David was clearly a family man first and foremost. He spent a lot of time with his grandsons,
Jim Jr and Kevin, and could always be found at the soccer park or baseball diamond when they
were playing. He could not have had a more enthusiastic cheerleader. He even attended their
music lessons and loved every minute.
-Eventually, David became a Great Grandad. His grandson, Jim Jr, married Lisa and they had 2
boys, Nash & Curtis. David then became known as GG (great grandad). The young ones
brought him a lot of joy and he talked about them constantly, letting anyone who would listen
know how good they were at soccer or music.
-His second grandson Kevin also got married to Melanie, giving him yet another person to fuss
over. He was so proud of them both.
-David also enjoyed travelling and with Brenda and Alison. They had many adventures with trips
to Hawaii, Disneyland and some great cruises to name a few.
He loved life and life loved him
David lived the last 5 years of his life at Evergreen Baptist Care Home on Oxford Street,
Whiterock, BC. It didn’t take him long to become very connected to the staff at the care home and he
always liked to give them treats. He would have us bring them for him and kept them in his night stand
drawer. Dad loved it when there was music getting played and would sing along.
Undoubtedly, there were so many good qualities that David brought to those who knew him. He
was very proud of his family, he knew how to make people feel welcome and always loved to get
visitors and chat about the events of the day, or tell a yarn or two to make people laugh.
Any day when the weather was nice, one of his kids would take him out into the garden. He so
enjoyed being outside and we would listen to his stories about Belfast, Mackies and the soccer, which he
knew so much about. .
We will miss our dad, his great stories, wonderful smile, bear hugs, early morning calls every
day at 8am, fish and chips, picnics in the garden at evergreen.
Rest In Peace love you to the moon and back,
Night-Night Dad God Bless
