March 10, 1940 – March 4, 2016
Passed peacefully surrounded by her loving family at the Peace Arch hospital in White Rock, BC on Friday, March 4th, 2016 at the age of 75.
Derrice was born and raised in Corner Brook, Newfoundland. After getting married to Bob in 1962 she left the island to begin the next phase of their life in Ottawa. In 1966 the family with their two boys in tow moved to Rome and Regina and in 1972 they returned to Ottawa until 1999 where they finally settled in White Rock, BC to be close to their many grandchildren. In 2007 Bob and Derrice parted ways amicably. She continued to enjoy life to its fullest, spending time with her friends, family and taking many enjoyable trips. Over the years she made numerous journeys back to Newfoundland which always remained so dear to her heart.
Without a doubt Derrice’s greatest happiness in life came from her family. Her boys were her pride and joy. She had wonderfully close relationships with both of her sons, daughter-in-laws and her five precious grandkids. She loved nothing more than having them all together for a family meal for whatever the celebration or holiday. She was a doting and fun Nana, who loved having the grandkids for sleep overs, cheering them on at their sports, special trips for ice cream or dinner out and always finding ways to make them each feel so loved and special.
Derrice was also an inspiration in her ability to make and maintain her many cherished friendships she established over the years. Humour, laughter and conversation along with her kind and caring nature were always front and centre with Derrice and she took such great joy out of doing even the smallest things for other people. Being thoughtful was so much a part of Derrice’s personality and rarely did a day go by that she didn’t have one or two things on the go with or for someone. Her calendar was always full of reminders about events and special occasions for family and friends.
Derrice was taken far too soon from all of us by ovarian cancer. Up until a week before her passing she continued to live a full and lively life. She was courageous throughout her brief treatment and was so appreciative of the support of her many dear friends and family during this time.
She is survived by: Her two sons Peter (Patty) and David (Andrea Pollock), her five grandchildren Elizabeth, Sarah, Danica, Connor and Lauren, her brother Fred (Terry), brother-in-law Cyril Sweetapple, nieces and nephews Gail, Derrice, Stephen and Jennifer. She is predeceased by her parents Hezekiah and Doris Gullage (Colbourne) and her sister Madge.
The family wishes to say thank you to the ICU nurses at the Peace Arch hospital and the Fraser Valley Cancer Centre chemotherapy treatment unit for their incredible compassion and care. We also wish to extend our sincere gratitude to Dr. Robyn McKnight, Dr. LeeAnn Martin, Dr. Jean Lauzon and Dr. Sean Rose for helping all of us through this difficult time.
A celebration of life will be held on Friday, March 11 at 10:00 A.M. at Victory Memorial Park Funeral Centre located at 14831 28th Ave, Surrey, BC V4P 1P3, (604)-536-6522.
A private interment will take place at Mount Patricia Cemetery in Corner Brook, Newfoundland at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, a memorial donation may be made to the BC Cancer Foundation.
