Dorothy Marilyn McArthur

IN THE CARE OF

Victory Memorial Park & Funeral Centre

In Loving Memory

Dorothy Marilyn McArthur

December 29, 1944 – May 24, 2026

It is with deep love and gratitude for a life beautifully lived that we announce the passing of our beloved mother, grandma, sister, daughter, wife, aunt, friend.

She is survived by her children John (Denise), Heather (Glen), Collin (Kim), her grandkids Ryleigh, Trever, Isabel and Gemma, her in laws Heather, Tony, Lynn, her step grandkids Tyler, Chloe and Monica and many nieces and nephews.

An only child, she grew up with a spirited independence and warmth that would define her throughout her life. In her younger years, she found joy and friendship with the Kelowna Car Club, where her vibrant personality and easy laughter made lasting connections.

In the late 1960s, she met the love of her life, Donald McArthur, beginning a partnership rooted in love, family and shared adventure. They married in 1970 and started their own family in 1971, building a home filled with love, laughter, and unwavering support. Together, they created a life rich in simple pleasures—camping and fishing at many beautiful lakes across British Columbia, surrounded by family and nature. They gave their children a truly wonderful childhood, full of love, laughter, fun, and cherished memories that will endure for generations.

She dedicated decades of her professional life to the Richmond Public Library, where her friendly nature and genuine kindness made her not just a colleague, but a friend to many. It was always easy for her to connect with others—she had a gift for making people feel welcome and valued.

She was deeply devoted to her husband, her one true love, whom she missed dearly after his passing. Living another 30 years without him, she carried on with remarkable strength, earning a reputation as “one tough cookie.” Her resilience, courage, and strong character inspired those who knew her and leaves a lasting impression on her kids.

Family was at the center of her life. She shared a special bond with her sisters-in-law, whom she considered sisters in every way, and she treasured their frequent conversations. Her grandchildren were a source of immense pride and joy, and she delighted in spoiling each one with love, attention, and laughter.

Later in life, she discovered a passion for Jeeps and embraced a new chapter in South Surrey, where she moved into a townhouse and became an active part of that community. She forged new friendships and continued to live life with enthusiasm and curiosity.

In her final years, she bravely battled dementia with grace and determination. She moved into Peace Portal Seniors Village, where the staff created an environment that felt far more like a family than a care home. She quickly became truly beloved by all at PPSV and was often described as a bright light with a kind and generous soul. She also became affectionately known as “everyone’s Mama Bear,” a reflection of her warmth, protectiveness, and enduring spirit. Their kindness and dedication brought comfort not only to her, but to all of us who loved her.

Jen became a dear friend, sharing laughter, companionship, and a love of reading—even together on her final evening. Tricia, who began as a companion quickly joined the PPSV team, and provided her with daily comfort and hugs. Kristin and her dog Nacho were a bright spot for her, they brought her great joy, reflecting her lifelong love of animals—she often knew the names of the pets before their owners, affectionately referring to people as “the dog’s parent.”

The nursing staff, and especially Christina, gave exceptional care and compassion, providing a steady, reassuring presence through difficult times. We are profoundly grateful for the love and dignity they showed her.

She leaves behind a legacy of strength, kindness, humour, and unconditional love—a life that touched so many and will continue to inspire all who knew her.

A private family memorial will be held in 2027.

In lieu of flowers, the family kindly asks that donations be made to a charity of your choice, in keeping with her generous spirit.

She will be forever loved, deeply missed, and always remembered.
