Ed Nelson passed away peacefully after a short illness at the age of 97 at Surrey Memorial Hospital, surrounded by his loving family. Despite having heart disease, he lived independently in the family home, played bridge weekly and enjoyed our many family gatherings. He will be greatly missed.
Ed was born in Medicine Hat, Alberta to Esther (Sederberg) and Gustav Nelson, the youngest of four children. He loved and excelled in sports, was active in the school community and had many close school friendships that lasted a lifetime. He married Shirley Anne Lines in 1953, and they had 5 children, four daughters and a son. In 1965, the family moved to British Columbia.
Ed had a successful 41-year career at Domglas starting as a pattern maker in Redcliff, Alberta in 1947. In 1964 he supervised the opening of the Burnaby plant as Production Manager and later became its Plant Manager. He retired in 1988. While working full time, he completed an MBA from SFU.
Ed was a devoted husband, father and grandfather. He believed that family came first and was always there to provide support and advice. He was an avid bridge player (winning many tournaments with Shirley as his partner), a world traveler and a volunteer supporting local community and business organizations including Kinsmen and Gyro. In retirement he volunteered overseas with CESO (Canadian Executive Services Organization) providing expertise to improve glass production in developing countries.
Ed is survived by daughters Marna (Michael), Debi, Laurelle (Alvin), son Tom (Charlotte), son-in-law Bert, 12 grandchildren, and 3 great grandchildren with 2 on the way. He is predeceased by wife Shirley, daughter Judie and son-in-law Harry.
