One definite thing we all know of Godfried is that he loved life. He particularly loved family get togethers, he loved people, young or old regardless of who or what they look like, and he loved to serve his community. To Godfried, every day was a warm sunny day and we all can recall his greetings to you each day you meet him; he would warmly say “top of the morning to you”. Godfried truly believed in community, service to that community, and connecting to others through time well spent. He believed our world could be improved if everyone simply dedicated a little bit of their time towards the common good.
Godfried was born at Koforidua, Ghana on Tuesday, April 24th, 1944, to Jonas Dodoo and Regina Adjacodjoe. As the first born to seven siblings and eight half siblings, Godfried assumed the responsibility of role model to his brothers and sisters and known as the chief disciplinarian yet a selfless, generous brother. Godfried’s childhood was one mix of responsibility and mischief. Godfried’s father as a police officer, meant his duty took the family to several postings all over Ghana. This, together with his ease at making friends, afforded Godfried the ability to learn and speak various languages. In all, Godfried spoke 5 Ghanaian languages in addition to English. Godfried’s childhood was marked by love for soccer and exploration.
After graduating from University of Cape Coast, Ghana with a Bachelor of Science, Godfried worked as a science teacher in a number of second cycle institutions in Ghana until 1978. In 1979 Godfried left Ghana for the Netherlands. Shortly after that, Godfried came to Canada and lived in Northern BC as Project Leader with Frontiers Canada, a team of volunteers tasked to construct homes for disadvantaged communities in northern British Columbia. Next, Godfried went back to his first love of teaching where he taught at a number of Christian High Schools namely Valley View Christian Academy, Cremona, Alberta, Mt. Roche Christian, Hazelton and Maranatha Christian, Merritt, BC. Godfried then pursued an academic program at Thompson Rivers University and eventually moved to the lower mainland in 1985. He worked as Sales Manager at Canadian Windows, the business which led him to finding the love of his life Madelyn. Godfried went on to settling into a self-business career as Financial and Insurance Consultant, a business he continued with until the terminal illness prevented this pursuit about 18 months ago.
Godfried was a man of faith, a man who loved the Lord. He actively sought to serve God’s people directly as well as through participation and serving in all areas of the church. Godfried served on the worship team at Calvary Christian before settling at Calvary Worship Centre his current place of worship until his passing.
Godfried’s heart for service extended to serving outside the church. He adored all things community and was ready to serve as long as required. Godfried was well rooted in the Ghanaian community but also in his wife’s Philippino community. He served superbly for several years as the President of Ghana-Canada Cultural Association of BC. He is celebrated as one of the most extraordinary leaders in the Ghanaian community. He funded several charities in his wife’s community back in the Philippines.
Godfried met his soul mate Madelyn 30 years ago and they remained inseparable since. Godfried is survived by six children, Maclean, Eric, Myra, Janelle, Melodee and Georgia.
Godfried especially will be remembered for his fiery spirit that served to strengthened everyone he met
