Jack Brown passed away peacefully March 22nd, 2019, at home with his family by his side.
Jack attended the University of British Columbia, graduating with a teaching degree before obtaining his Master’s from the University of Washington. He spent 35 years teaching in the Surrey School district, 27 of those years at Lord Tweedsmuir Secondary School in Cloverdale. He taught history, social studies, law and career education.
He coached many school sports teams over the years and was instrumental in starting girls’ community soccer in South Surrey in the ‘70s, and was their Head referee. He was a volunteer coach at the White Rock Lawn Bowling Club.
Jack served as President of the Surrey Historical Society and Chairman of the Lord Tweedsmuir Alumni Association.
He had a passion for history, and created a History of Surrey website (www.surreyhistory.ca) based off his Masters thesis. He continued to expand the site through additional research, and from contributions by others interested in Surrey history. Jack was the 2013 recipient of the British Columbia Historical Federation Best Web Site Award. He was awarded Surrey’s 2014 Heritage in the City Award in the Education - Interpretation category. The Surrey Historical Society will continue to support his website.
He is so loved by his wife of 57 years, Lynda, daughters Leanne (Greg), Janet, and son Steve (Jill). He cherished his grandchildren Brandon, Lauren, Nathan, Ella, Luke, Grayce and Nyah and said he wished he had more time to watch them grow up.
A Celebration of Jack’s life will be held at 2 pm, on Thursday April 25th at Morgan Creek Golf course.
