It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Gary John Mason on January 24th, in South Surrey, at the well lived age of 88.
With his hand held tight, his beloved Four Aces music playing in the background and a hockey game on the tv…he passed calmly and lovingly.
Gary was born in Fort William, Ontario (now Thunder Bay) and was the son of John and Marjorie Mason and older brother to Bruce.
He was a proud Ontarian, but after accepting a job offer in 1964 in B.C., Gary headed west with only his convertible car and a dream. He went on to be part of the construction team of the new Prince George Pulp and Paper Mill. Here he would meet his first wife Alberta and her two sons, and also welcome a daughter to the world.
After advancing his career at PG Pulp, a new opportunity arose and he joined Northwood Pulp and Timber, in which he worked proudly for over 25 years.
He retired early and settled in the city of Vernon, where he lived for over 25 years with his second wife Ann.
Gary was a true sports fan and never met a sport he didn’t like but his favourites were baseball, hockey and curling. He collected many trophies and awards over the years both playing and coaching.
To him, it was always a perfect day if the Leafs were playing.
He would never divulge his overall favourite team but the top choices were the Toronto Maple Leafs, Toronto Blue Jays and the St. Louis Cardinals. Growing up, Saturday night just wasn’t right without the Hockey Night in Canada theme song playing and hamburgers and potato chips for dinner.
Once he settled in Vernon, he became a diehard Vernon Vipers hockey fan and wore his jacket proudly up until the end.
Gary made many friends over his 88 years through his involvement with the Elks Club, The Legion, Curling Clubs and many sports teams over the years. He truly was the life of the party and never shied away from having a good time.
Gary is missed and survived by his daughter Myrna (Chris), stepsons Dale (Tracey) and Rory. Also by his grandsons Jordan (Kate) and Eric, brother Bruce (Shirley) and several nieces and nephews and their families. He was predeceased by wives Alberta and Ann as well as many friends and coworkers.
He was loved and will be missed.
Until we meet again and watch another game Dad…be at peace. I love you.
