Which memory of Kiera do I pick? The two year old playing tug of war with Dummy, the family dog? The three year old fetching her dad a beer from the fridge? The five year old I took camping to Birch Bay one weekend and had fantastical stories to tell in the morning about a magical bunny who came to visit our tent in the middle of the night to bring us happiness, or the doting six year old playing with her baby brother?
There are also memories of visiting Kiera in the care home while she fought with the disease that would eventually claim her life. She was a fighter. Even when it was so difficult for her to speak, she would struggle to talk. I used to wonder what stories she wanted to tell us, if only she could.
I believe Kiera is at peace now. A life cut far too short by a horrendous disease that Kiera fought for as long as she could.
I have been thinking about that magical bunny a lot these days. I hope he finds Kiera again and brings her the happiness I wish for her.

I first met Kiera when she was a young girl while visiting in the LaBorge family home with my sister. Kiera was full of energy, smiles, inquisitive and had personal composure and confidence to speak with me, an unknown adult. Over the years, my sister kept me informed regarding what was happening in Kiera’s life. I next visited Kiera together with my sister when Kiera was in hospital three years ago. Kiera was in bed, unable to independently get out of bed, yet able to slightly move. Kiera spoke with us, although speaking was a challenge for her. Kiera’s speaking was poised and gracious. She had a deep rich voice. There laying on her hospital bed, a difficult situation, Kiera presented a deep calm and composure. I live overseas and often, over the years wherever I have been, I have had thoughts of Kiera, wishing her freedom from her medical condition - rather a rich full life. Unfortunately, that did not happen for Kiera. Now though, Kiera is free - free of all encumbrances. I wish her amazing and eternal joy. My thoughts of sympathy are also with Kathy and family at this most difficult time with Kiera’s passing. May the memories of good times shared together with Kiera, continue to be their treasures.
