Lillie Hick was born April 5, 1924 in Vegreville Alberta. Her childhood years were lived on the family farm with the challenges and memories that accompanied prairie life back then. Her family later moved to British Columbia settling in the Chilliwack area. She married Harold Wells after his return from active duty in World War II and later gave birth to her daughter June. In 1959 Harold succumbed to cancer. As a young woman, Lillie had taken a job in Spencer’s store --- later to become Eaton’s. With Harold’s passing, that job became a mainstay of her life. She distinguished herself in retailing and was given a Store Manager’s position in Mission, B.C. – the first woman in Canada to break the glass ceiling and be named a Store Manager with a major chain. As a manager, she excelled in improving stores and was progressively moved to larger ones in Vernon and Duncan before ending her career in retirement from the Guildford store in Surrey, B.C.

In retirement years, she married Dr. William Hick and they spent 22 years together in Surrey, B.C. Those years included extensive travel around the globe and brought many rich memories. Lillie had a strong love of family and lived for gatherings with relatives. Throughout her adult life, she was a committed Christian and was active in the Salvation Army and in other churches in cities where she lived. Her faith sustained her and is perhaps best reflected in her favorite psalm.

“Praise the Lord Oh my soul, all my inmost being praise His holy name. Praise the Lord Oh my soul and forget not all His benefits – who forgives all your sins and heals all your diseases, who redeems your life from the pit and crowns you with love and compassion, who satisfies your desires with good things so that your youth is renewed like the eagle’s….The Lord is compassionate and gracious, slow to anger, abounding in love… for as high as the heavens are above the earth, so great is His love for those who fear Him…. Praise the Lord you his angels…Praise the Lord all his heavenly hosts, you his servants who do his will, Praise the Lord, all his works everywhere in his dominion. Praise the Lord Oh my soul.”

Psalm 103

Aunt Lil was someone I looked up to as a mentor in my life and on my faith journey. I will always be grateful for the impact that she had on me. She will be sadly missed but thanks be to God we shall meet again!
I do remember with a smile the times that she tried to impress on my four brothers how to treat a lady, by making them open doors for me... much to their chagrin.
Our thoughts and prayers continue for you all.

Lillie's kindness impressed me in our first acquaintance when I was beginning my journey in the employment world in 1954 at Eatons. She dealt patiently with customers and staff (including this trembling teenager learning procedures of 'the job'). She enjoyed her daily challenge of meeting and serving people kindly.
Years later her thoughtfulness still flourished when my journey took me through the valley of the shadow of death with the sudden loss of my husband, Vernon. God's faithfulness in her journey prompted her to reach out to encourage me in my crisis. I will always cherish these and other memories of her.

Dave and I stopped in Vernon on our honeymoon and so stopped in at the store to say Hi. She wouldn’t have seen me for many years and I’m sure wondered who the heck had her paged. She was so gracious in acknowledging us and I will always remember that visit. Dawn (Wells) Veltikold
