My wonderful mother, Margaret Williamina "Billie" McFetridge, nee Haley, peacefully passed away on July 30th at home, with me by her side. Mom suffered so greatly in the past years, it was truly a blessing to see her go home to God, my Dad and all her siblings and many friends who have predeceased her. She was a beautiful, devoted, kind, selfless mother and I shall miss her strength and guidance every day. Mom was born to William and Dorothy Haley on Nov. 22, 1917 in New Waterford, Nova Scotia. Cape Breton is where her heart and home always belonged. Mom graduated from St. Joseph's Hospital nursing school in Glace Bay. During WWII she enlisted with the 23rd Canadian General Hospital and was first stationed at Watford, England. She was soon transferred to the 15th Canadian Hospital in Italy. It was here she met a handsome young quartermaster named Thomas Bankhead McFetridge, whom she later married on July 3, 1945 in Colchester, England. Throughout the years Mom was an active volunteer. She was keenly active in the Nursing Sisters Association in Vancouver of which she was past president. She was an ongoing volunteer at UBC and St. Vincent's hospitals. Mom has many friends in White Rock, including her friends at the Parish of the Sea bridge club of which she was a charter member. Mom dearly loved and stayed in contact with her extended family in Nova Scotia and I thank them for their kind support at this sad time. Mom is predeceased by her husband, Thomas Bankhead McFetridge and her three brothers, Judge Martin D. Haley, Campbell MacEachern (Mac) Haley, and Marian Theodore (Ted) Haley. Mom is survived by her only daughter, Patricia Anne Patterson, son-in-law William Patterson and loved grandchildren Haley and Liam, all of Scottsdale, Az., as well as her many nieces and nephews in Nova Scotia. A funeral mass will be held at Good Shepherd Church, Tues. Aug. 9th, 2011 at 11:00am situated at 2250 150th St., White Rock. Refreshments will follow the service at the church.
