June 12, 2023 – October 2, 2026
Margaret Toews passed away October 2, 2026 in White Rock, BC at the age of 103.
She was predeceased by her parents John and Helen Adam (Smart), her husband Ernie F. Toews and her sister Evelyn (George) Penner. She is survived by her children Wayne (Judy), Grant (Phylis) and Donna, her grandchildren Regan (Cory), Laura (Luciano), Adam (Heather) and her great grandchildren John and Maia Toews, Bronson and Elsie Capozza.
Margaret was born in Dodsland, SK and lived her early life on her father’s homestead north of Herschel, SK. After completing her high school education in Herschel she moved to Winnipeg to train as a nurse at St. Boniface Hospital. She worked as a practical nurse in Steinbach, MB where she met her husband Ernie. They were married September 27, 1945 and made their home in Winnipeg.
In 1956 Margaret and Ernie moved to Saskatoon, SK when Ernie was promoted to manager at the B.F Goodrich store, then to Winnipeg, MB for another promotion and finally to North Vancouver, BC where he became district manager. A few years after Ernie’s death, she bravely sold the house and moved to North Delta, BC. With each relocation she found volunteer positions with a variety of groups and was welcomed for her hard work and dedication.
Margaret was a Girl Guide leader and filled many roles with the organization over 60 years. She had a close relationship with Crossroads United Church in Delta BC. In addition to caring for her family (sewing clothes, canning food, knitting mitts, baking cookies) she used her many skills to help with charitable fundraisers and always had ideas how to reuse and repurpose many things. She created beautiful hand-crafted works of art and was known for her dill pickles. She made friends with her neighbours and was known to give them a wave while independently cutting her lawns, right up to the day she moved into the Seniors’ facility at age 98.
The family is grateful for the care she received at the Dr. Al Hogg Pavilion in White Rock, B.C.
No funeral service will be held. Interment at Capilano View cemetery.
In lieu of flowers please consider a donation to the Girl Guides of Canada or another charity that benefits young people.
