Margit Ruta Mikelsons

With deep love and sorrow, we announce the passing of Margit Ruta Mikelsons, who died on August 11, 2025 at Peace Arch Hospital after a four-month stay. She was 59 years old.

Born in Peace Arch Hospital on September 18, 1965, Margit was a long-time resident of South Surrey and Abbotsford. She was a beloved daughter, mother, sister, aunt, and grandmother whose spirit was unmatched. No matter what challenges life handed her, she met each one with strength and determination. She always put one foot in front of the other never giving up, always moving forward.

The greatest love of Margit’s life was her children and grandchildren, especially her five grandchildren. Her identity as MeeMa was the biggest part of her heart, and she embraced it with every ounce of love she had to give.

Margit was the kind of person who always put others before herself. She showed up for everyone, no matter what was asked. She was creative, artistic, and generous. She spent years working as a talented goldsmith and more recently as a florist. She could crochet anything and often crafted beautiful gifts for her family. She loved hunting for bargains and used her many shopping trips to spoil her grandkids - just because she could. She also had a deep and lifelong love for animals - especially dogs. She is predeceased by her beloved pups Vegas, Chaos and Houdini, they were more than companions; they were family. Margit’s kindness extended to every creature, and animals always seemed to sense her gentle heart.

Margit is survived by her mother, Mary Mikelsons; her beloved son Derek Martin and daughter Amanda Mitchell; two sisters Sapphire and Myra; two nieces Chelsea and Grace; and her five adored grandchildren Bella, Matthew, Charles, Victoria (Peanut) and Lexlynn. She was predeceased by her father, Arnold Mikelsons, and her brother, Arnold Mikelsons Jr.

Her love, her strength, and her laughter live on in the people she loved most. She will be missed beyond measure and remembered always as our fearless, loving MeeMa.
