Martin (Marty) was a kind and generous soul who left an indelible mark on this world in his almost 75 years. Born in Hungary in the midst of war, forced relocation as an infant was a brutal introduction to the struggles early life would bring. His family found temporary stability in Gartringen, Germany, before eventually emigrating in 1953 to a farm in Tillsonburg, Ontario often noting "(his) back still aches..." Marty received his BA from the University of Toronto at St. Michael's College and his MA at UBC. It was while at UBC that he met his wife, Jackie. They married, settled in Vancouver and raised two sons. Marty’s love and commitment to providing for his family was unremitting. Together with Jackie, and on behalf of their oldest son Michael, Marty advocated tirelessly for the needs of people with disabilities and their integration into society. His commitment continued after Jackie’s passing and he leaves behind a significant legacy that attests to that dedication. Besides being a proud father, Marty was a teacher, a businessman and an entrepreneur. He loved cars and, yes, the accordion. Marty was one of those special people who would, without question, be the first to offer help whether with friendship, financial assistance or advice. Survived by Barbara Deglau, his devoted partner with whom he was so lucky to spend his final years, sons Michael and Stefan and sister Barbara Kress. Family and friends are invited to commemorate a life well-lived on Friday, March 29th at 11:30 am at St. Alban Anglican Church, 7260 St Albans Rd, Richmond. Interment will follow at Victory Memorial Park Cemetery in Surrey. Reception at 7295 Angus Drive at 4:00 pm. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the BC Lung Association or Planned Lifetime Advocacy Network.
