Jessica Qing Zhao: A Life of Love, Faith, Courage, and Service

February 27, 1966 – May 28, 2026

Jessica Qing Zhao was born on February 27, 1966, in Chengdu, China. She graduated with a degree in Chinese Language and Literature from Chengdu University.

Upon graduation in 1985, she was recognized as an Outstanding University Graduate. In recognition of her achievements and leadership potential, she was selected for the Sichuan Provincial Outstanding Young Cadres Development Program, becoming one of the province’s promising young leaders chosen for advanced leadership training.

That same year, she met her future husband, Eric Huang. In 1986, they attended the Sichuan Provincial Outstanding Young Cadres Training Program at the Second Cadre Institute in Chongqing. Through shared learning, growth, and aspirations, they came to know and love one another. What began as a beautiful friendship in their youth became a lifelong journey of devotion and partnership, spanning 41 years together. Jessica and Eric had 2 children together: Nissen Huang (born in 1991 in Chengdu, China), and Lisha Huang (born in 1995 in McAllan, Texas).

Jessica served as Secretary of the Youth League Committee of Chengdu Radio Factory No. 3, First Deputy Secretary of the Communist Youth League Committee of Chengdu’s Xicheng District, and She later joined the Xicheng District Policy Research Office as a Research Fellow at the Deputy Division Director level. At the time, Xicheng District was one of the core districts of Chengdu, and had a population of 500,000 with 200,000 youths. In these roles, Jessica led hundreds of youth organizations across government agencies, schools, and businesses, helped guide the district’s young people, and was widely regarded as a highly promising young leader with an exceptionally bright future.

In 1993, Jessica immigrated to the US to reunite with her husband, who was pursuing his Master’s and made the painful decision to leave her baby in the care of her parents in China. She left a promising life to start over in Texas. In addition to juggling various jobs such as a Chinese tutor, server, and cashier, she also worked diligently to learn English from scratch. Through hard work and perseverance, she helped her and Eric navigate the most challenging years of their lives.

When Eric found a job after his Master’s, life became more stable and they welcomed their daughter, Lisha. Jessica also began taking courses in economics and business at the local community college to continue to improve herself. Together, she and Eric also operated a small retail and wholesale business on weekends.

For Jessica, family was always life’s greatest treasure and she and her husband longed for their son, Nissen. In 1997, Jessica and Eric immigrated to Canada to have her family reunited. From 1998-2010, together with her husband, Jessica founded China King Restaurant, beginning their entrepreneurial journey together. In addition to the restaurant, they also explored international trade, investment consulting, media and newspaper publishing.

During this time, she also dedicated herself to community service and education. She worked as a principal and program coordinator at a nonprofit Chinese school in Surrey, actively supporting immigrant families and the Chinese community. She concurrently pursued a profession in accounting, taking night classes at UBC towards her CGA designation, while juggling taking care of her kids, and running the restaurant.

In 2011, Jessica began a new professional chapter as a financial advisor. Over the next 8 years, she built a successful practice and earned the trust and respect of her clients. In 2019, at the height of her independent practice, Jessica made the personal sacrifice to support her husband. As Eric joined RBC Dominion Securities and his career rapidly grew, she sold her practice and joined his team. She continued to work at RBC up until her passing, helping clients achieve both financial security and life goals.

Jessica also served as one of the founding board members of the White Rock Chinese Association, dedicating 7 years (2005-2012) to community building. She devoted significant time and energy to supporting the growth and well-being of the Chinese community in South Surrey / White Rock.

After becoming a Christian in 1996, Jessica devoted herself wholeheartedly to church life and ministry. She was a member of Faith Hope Love Church (1997–2015) and Willingdon Church (2015–2026). Jessica faithfully led Bible study groups and Sunday classes, participated in the church choir, and actively participated in women’s ministries.

Jessica always placed family at the center of her life. She was a devoted and selfless wife, mother, and sister who deeply loved her family. She was a loyal and dependable friend, trusted colleague, and a woman filled with faith and compassion. Her life spanned three countries: China, the US, and Canada. At every stage of life, she was willing to sacrifice for her family, for those she loved, and for shared dreams. Jessica loved gardening, drawing, yoga, hiking, singing, Toastmasters, and dancing. She cherished playing ping pong with her husband, Eric, and loved to travel, with a special fondness for Banff and Lake Como. She had a gift for seeing beauty in the world and expressing it through her art and movement.

In 2024, Jessica was diagnosed with Stage IV cancer. Over the following two years, she and her family walked a difficult journey through treatment, receiving care at several of the world’s leading medical institutions in both Canada and the US. Throughout her battle with cancer, Jessica never gave up. She displayed extraordinary courage, resilience, and faith. Even during the most difficult moments, she continued to care for her family, encourage her friends, and face each day with peace and determination.

On May 28, 2026, surrounded by her beloved family, Jessica passed away peacefully at Vancouver General Hospital at the age of 60. Although cancer ultimately took her life, cancer never defeated her. The love, wisdom, kindness, faith, and example she leaves behind will continue to inspire and influence all who knew and loved her.

Jessica was deeply loved, and she will be forever missed.
