Robert (Bob) George Hale

It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Bob Hale, who died peacefully at Peace Arch Hospital on Father’s Day, June 21, 2026, at the age 85.

Bob was born at St. Paul's Hospital and raised in East Vancouver. Early in life he developed a lifelong love of playing baseball which expanded to golfing, skiing, curling, swimming, card games, reading and the simple pleasure of spending time with friends and family. He remained active in various sports throughout his life, skiing in Whistler with his son Brent, until the age of 65. Given their mutual love of travel, Bob and Joan traveled through most of North America in their working years. Then, after retirement, ventured to many other countries throughout the world.

Bob was predeceased by his parents, George and Marnie Hale, and by his sister, Sharon Fitger. He is lovingly remembered by his devoted wife of nearly 59 years, Joan Hale (nee Borys); his son Brent Hale; daughter-in-law Brittany Gardner; and step-grandchildren Alex, Cezar, and Peach, all of whom brought him great pride and happiness. He will be also dearly missed by many more extended family members.

Bob joined the Royal Canadian Mounted Police on April 16, 1964, beginning a distinguished 31-year career serving Canadians across the country. Following training at Depot Division in Regina, his postings took him Regina Saskatchewan to Ottawa, Penticton, Prince Rupert, “E” Division Headquarters, and ultimately Vancouver International Airport, where he retired as a Sergeant in June 1995. He was especially proud of his work in forensic identification, taking great care to present objective, meticulous evidence in the pursuit of justice. Although deeply proud of his career with the Force, he spoke of it with characteristic humility.

More than his accomplishments, Bob treasured the friendships formed over decade of service and the opportunity to see Canada alongside Joan. He said that none of it would have been possible without her support through the many moves and challenges of police life. Together they built a life filled with love, adventure, and lasting friendships.

Above all, Bob was a devoted husband and father. He took quiet pride in his family and was happiest in their company. To those who knew him best, Bob will be remembered for his kindness, humility, resilience, and wry, sharp sense of humor. He gave generously to those he cared about and asked for little in return.

He faced health challenges of his later years with remarkable courage and quiet stoicism. In his final days, reflecting on his life, Bob said that although, like any life, there had been difficult times, he looked back in “mostly happy memories”. Those simple words beautifully captured the gratitude, optimism, and perspective with which he lived, and the legacy he leaves behind.

A Celebration of Life will be held Saturday, July 25, 2026, at Morgan Creek Golf Course. Details will be shared with family and friends.

The family extends heartfelt thanks to all the dedicated healthcare professionals, who cared for Bob throughout his illness, and to the many friends and family whose kindness and support have meant so much during this time.
