Mr. Rankin preferred to be known as “Tommy” which is a carryover from his days working in the Yarrows shipbuilding yards in Victoria, British Columbia.  Tommy's wife, Irene (nee Clarke) passed away in 1980 and Tommy moved in with his beloved daughter Marilyn and granddaughter Courtney in 1987.  Over the past 25 years Marilyn enjoyed sharing her life with Tommy and making sure he fully participated in all family functions.  In return, Tommy helped Marilyn and the family with practical solutions to household problems and providing his unique skills as a blacksmith and general handyman.   
Courtney had the wonderful daily benefit of Tommy's views on life and accorded him the special name of “Perp”.  It was under this name that his legend grew throughout Courtney's group of friends and,  in later years, her workmates.  Within the family Tommy became interchangeable with Perp or Dad and in truth none mattered as he knew he was always thought of with love and respect.   Over the years, we saw Tommy age and acquire the infirmities that time demands; but never did we see Tommy give in to them  or recognize they even existed.  Instead, Tommy took it all in stride and demonstrated such a positive approach to life and people that we believed he was invincible 
Though time must ultimately win all battles with mortals, Tommy gave as good as he got and it took a thief in the night to defeat him.  It is with heartache and sorrow that we must bid him adieu but we all expect him to be waiting for us, with his adored Irene, his arms extended and his thumbs up-turned.  
Goodbye for now Tommy, may your wait be as happy as you've made our lives!
