Roberta Kathleen Caldwell

Roberta was born in Star City, Saskatchewan as the Great War to End all Wars was winding down. The Great Depression followed and defined her formative years. She soon learned how to make the most of very little and have fun at the same time. It became ingrained in her that there is always room at the table for one more and a bed for someone in need. Unable to join the armed forces in 1940 for health reasons, she spent the war years working in the munitions factories in Toronto. When peace was declared at last in 1945, she married Robert (Bob) Caldwell and embarked on a new life adventure. While living in Alberta, Bob and Buddie (as she was known as at the time) advertised for a boarder to help with expenses, and a 15-year old girl answered the ad. Not only did they take her in, she moved to Calgary with them, Bob gave her away at her wedding and she is still considered the ‘bonus’ daughter in the family.

Roberta’s entire life has been irrevocably tied to some of the most historic events of the twentieth century. While we study history, she embodied it.

Roberta raised five daughters on a shoestring, working from home as a seamstress for years. A memorable example was the contract she had with a local Boy Scout chapter in Calgary that involved making 107 traditional Scottish kilts. The small house was draped in red tartan for months and all the daughters were made miniature versions. Throughout her life, Roberta kept her quirky sense of humour, and passed it on to her daughters. Roberta epitomized what the term ‘homemaker’ should mean – home was wherever she was. She baked pies, canned fruit, made jelly (never jam – it was too easy), knitted effortlessly and endlessly, crocheted, tatted, did both fine and crewel embroidery and wrote poetry in her spare time. Her penmanship would have rivaled any Hallmark engraver and she was ambidextrous to boot. She personally designed story quilts, hand appliqued and hand quilted on a giant homemade frame for all of her children and grandchildren. She leaves behind not only beautiful treasures but treasured memories as well. Rest in the peace you so richly deserve. We miss you already.
