Verna Woewoda (nee Kurucz) passed away on October 20, 2026, leaving behind a loving family and a lifetime of memories that will be held close forever.
Verna was born on September 3, 1930, in Heinsberg, Alberta, to Helen and Frank Kurucz. Her parents were Hungarian immigrants who came to Canada with their own parents, carrying hope for a better life and the courage to build one. Born during the Great Depression, Verna grew up in challenging times, an experience that shaped the generation to which she belonged.
On June 30, 1950 Verna married Ernie Woewoda, beginning a partnership that would last more than six decades. Together, they raised three children: Darlene (John), Carolyn, and Jim. As the years passed, their family grew to include grandchildren Cameron, Kimberly, Stefan, Collin, and Erik, as well as Jennifer and Matthew, Johns children, who were embraced as part of the extended family. Verna's family continued to grow with the arrival of her three great-grandchildren, Emma, Georgia, and Alex.
In 1968, Verna and Ernie began an important new chapter when they purchased Whalley Lanes. For 36 years, the bowling alley was a central part of their lives, bringing with it years of work, responsibility, and shared experiences. They operated the business together until selling it in 2004, when they retired and moved on to the next chapter of their lives.
Verna spent the last eight years of her life at Peace Portal Seniors Village in White Rock. We extend our heartfelt thanks to everyone at Peace Portal for the kindness, compassion, and loving care they provided to Verna during her time there. Your care and support are deeply appreciated by her family.
Verna was predeceased by her beloved husband, Ernie, in 2011. Their marriage spanned more than 60 years, encompassing the raising of their children, the growth of their family, and decades of working together. The life they shared remains an important part of their family's history.
Verna's life spanned nearly a century of change, from her childhood during the Great Depression to the many years she spent raising her family and building a life with Ernie. Her story is part of a larger family history that began with her parents' journey to Canada and continued through the generations that followed.
Verna will be lovingly remembered by her children, Darlene (john), Carolyn, and Jim; her grandchildren, Cameron, Kimberly, Stefan, Collin, Erik, Jennifer, and Matthew; her great-grandchildren, Emma, Georgia, and Alex; and her brother, Rudy.
Her life behind a family that will continue through the generations, along with memories and stories that will remain a part of their lives.
She will be remembered by her family and missed by those who shared in her life.
